Moro Beach is the place to be for stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers plus campers looking for incredible ocean views. Meanwhile, body surfers head to Reef Point. The Historic District features 46 vintage cottages while Pelican Point has bluff-top parking with beach access points and restroom facilities with outdoor showers.

Back Bay Loop 

The Back Bay Loop Trail also returns to the ranking as a readers’ favorite. The 10.5-mile, well-marked trail goes around Upper Newport Bay and is frequented by outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. It has multiple entry points with options for scenic stops. The flat paved trail easily accommodates bikes and strollers so the whole family can experience the bay.

Irvine Regional Park

Irvine Regional Park tops our list for the 16th time. The park, which is celebrating its 125th birthday throughout this year, features close to 500 acres of picnic areas, sport fields, hiking and equestrian trails. Other activities include the Orange County Zoo, the Irvine Park Railroad, pony rides for children, a lake where you can ride aquacycle rentals and much, much more.

Best Place to Catch Your First Fish 

Huntington Beach Pier

The readers have spoken, and in their opinion, Huntington Beach Pier is still the best place to catch your first fish. At 1,850 feet long, the iconic pier is one of the longest on the West Coast. It’s open from 5 a.m. until midnight and because it’s public, a fishing license is not required. Bring your gear and try to get your catch, and if the effort makes you hungry, a new restaurant, Bud & Gene’s, just opened in the former Ruby’s Diner location.

Aquarium of the Pacific

The Aquarium of the Pacific is Southern California’s largest aquarium and one of the leading attractions in the area. It displays about 12,000 animals and more than 100 exhibits for kids and adults, as well as educational programs, hands-on activities and lectures. One of the latest exhibits, Babies!, introduces visitors to the youngest and cutest residents. Other activities include the Shark Lagoon, Coral Reefs, Sea Otter Habitat, June Keyes Penguin Habitat and more. Aquarium webcams even let you check in on the sea life from anywhere.

Our readers love Knott’s Berry Farm and its thrilling rides and attractions in four themed areas inspired by California history and culture. Old West Ghost Town will get your heart racing with the Silver Bullet inverted roller-coaster and GhostRider, the fastest, longest and tallest wooden roller-coaster on the West Coast. Halloween season is extra special at the park as it turns into Knott’s Scary Farm and Knott’s Spooky Farm.

Best Place to Help Seals and Sea Lions

Pacific Marine Mammal Center

Pacific Marine Mammal Center has a long history of ocean conservation through rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals and educating the public. The center relies on volunteers, who do everything from helping with animal care to leading educational programs or working in the gift shop. The center is open for visitors to see recovering marine mammals daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry is free but donations are appreciated.
