Vanessa Marroquin

Vanessa Marroquin
Orange Grove Elementary School – Anaheim

Vanessa Marroquin has been the principal since fall 2020. In just three short years, and through a global pandemic, she made an already great work environment into an incredible one. School climate and test scores have improved since she arrived, but those are not the only important aspects of a school. She has cultivated a loving and supportive community where all feel heard and valued. Orange Grove is a safe, effective and fun environment for students, teachers, staff and families. She actively listens to concerns and suggestions from everyone and takes action — this makes everyone feel valued and validated. Marroquin understands the significance and importance of family in the school community. She opens the campus and creates a warm and welcoming environment for parents and guardians to participate in school. She hosts many events throughout the year: Lunch with a Tiger, classroom learning walks, monthly Coffee Chats, various parent trainings and parent leadership opportunities. The parents at Orange Grove see the value Marroquin adds to the close-knit community.

“This particular nomination means so much to me because I was proudly raised by two immigrant parents that worked hard to provide my sisters and I with opportunity.”
Mary Jane Miller

Mary Jane Miller
Fairmont Private Schools

When Mary Jane (MJ) Miller joined Fairmont in 2020, not only was she stepping into a new leadership position at the five-campus school group, but she was doing so during a recently declared pandemic and as schools were adjusting to an entirely new way of educating their students. While COVID proved to be a significant challenge for all schools, the steps taken under Miller’s leadership at Fairmont allowed students to escape the devastating COVID slide that affected so many. With a 20-year record of successfully leading educational institutions, Miller was perfectly positioned to help Fairmont traverse these uncharted waters. And now, leveraging her extensive experience, she is guiding the organization to new heights in the post-pandemic world. While there are many complexities to what Miller embraces in her role as Fairmont’s chief strategy and operations officer, there is one thing that is remarkably straightforward about it — she prioritizes the needs, experiences and outcomes of students, a commitment deeply influenced by her upbringing as the sole daughter of an educator.

“It’s a joyful privilege to work alongside the dedicated, talented and hard-working educators at Fairmont who have chosen to guide our extraordinary students along their academic and social journeys.”
Maria Rowell

She not only welcomes parents, staff and students with warmth but also takes prompt and effective action to address their concerns. This has cultivated an atmosphere of trust, transparency and collaboration within the school. She is a lifelong learner who inspires others through her continuous pursuit of knowledge and innovative practices. Her adaptability and forward-thinking approach have propelled the school forward in the ever-evolving field of education. Her sense of humor is a tremendous asset, creating a positive and enjoyable work environment. Even in challenging situations, Rowell’s optimism shines through, uplifting those around her. As a team player, she fosters collaboration and values input from all stakeholders. She is a meticulous, detail-oriented leader who ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the school.

“My hope is to equip all educational partners with a learners mindset. As a parent myself, school choice is powerful.”
Courtney Smith

Courtney Smith

Under her leadership, the school has transformed into a hub of creativity, where students and staff alike are encouraged to think beyond conventional boundaries. What truly distinguishes Smith is her ability to foster a sense of community and school spirit. From warmly greeting students at the school gates to actively participating in spirit days and school events, she epitomizes the essence of school pride. This active engagement extends beyond administrative duties, as Smith interacts with teachers, parents and students on a daily basis, creating a harmonious and collaborative educational environment. Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Smith willingly takes on multiple roles, contributing significantly to various aspects of school life.
