When it comes to what makes the meal for Christmas, many might argue it is the classic turkey, others might vote for ham — but what truly matters is having the family gather around and spend quality time…while feasting till their buttons pop! A rather unwanted side dish that often makes an appearance, especially for the host/hostess, is a heaping help of stress. Managing dietary restrictions, timing so as not to miss Santa’s arrival, kitchens made to cook normal-sized family meals rather than army-level attendees, stores that deservedly give their employees a break by closing, making those last minute dashes for “just one more thing” turn into a line around the block at the nearest CVS…these are the realities of hosting a large family.
If you are tearing more hair out than presents open, consider our cheat — Whole Foods Whole Leg of Lamb Roast, Prime Rib and Smoked Turkey Holiday dinners with all the sides (do NOT miss the truffled potatoes, hominah hominah). Even vegetarians are nicely covered, and if you have a mix of dietary needs — the organic and gluten-free options will soon have you merry and bright!
Dessert? Dip a Mallow
Some might go cray and make their own marshmallows, others might opt for the biggest bag of campfire standards for little ones who can’t fully appreciate a good thing just yet (though we think it’s a perfect time to do a taste test and build those petite palates!), in any case, building a DIY Dipped Marshmallow Flight with a steaming cup of cocoa — spiked with marshmallow vodka or not — makes a perfect finale for a holiday meal. (We stir ours with a candy cane, cause we’re crazy like that.)
Our top pick for a festive treat are these shmancy SmashMallows (www.smashmallow.com) that not only come in a wild variety of flavors, but are gluten-free, all natural and so gorgeous they are befitting a special occasion meal. Melt chocolate in a double boiler or in a micro for 15-30 seconds at a time, stirring until smooth and glossy. Lay out the parchment and let your imaginations soar. We find the Cinnamon Churro, Mint Chocolate Chip and Espresso Bean pair nicely!
