Food Portion Management

The Magic Trick to Meet Your Goals

It’s almost always bikini season in OC, but with the kids about to hit the waterparks and invites to family pool parties rolling in, a little maintenance never hurt anyone. Rather than deprive yourself of favorites because they might not be on your personal plan, indulge…in moderation.

Dr. Caroline Cederquist, M.D., founder of bistroMD (www.bistroMD.com) offers some tips on how to keep portions under control.

  1. When eating out at a restaurant, have the server box half your meal before it is served so you aren’t tempted to overeat.
  2. Don’t eat from the box or bag. Researchers from Cornell University found that people ate 50% more chips when they were given no visual cues as to how large a portion should be. We serve ourselves more from larger bags and we view how much we have eaten based upon what is left in the bag. So always portion foods out of the bag and onto a plate.
  3. When eating at home, serve yourself 1 portion and pack up the leftovers. This will keep you from going back for more. Bonus — you will have something delicious to eat the next day!

We know things get hectic – here are our favorite portion tools for when you’re on the go-go-GO!

Fitlosophy Live Life Fit Snackstak

Fitlosophy Live Life Fit Snackstak

We adored the fact that this tucked perfectly into the waterbottle holder of our gym bag…and the coffee cup spot in the car console…and the bottle holder on the stroller. Having a choice of sweet and salty healthy snacks always at hand kept us from hitting Starbucks for a muffin (and giant Frappuccino, since we were there).

Bentology portion perfect

Bentology’s Portion Perfect

This was like going back to school, in the best way. We loved getting creative packing our lunch for the day in all the cute little bento-licious compartments and sections. Lunch felt exciting, like unwrapping fun mini-packages.

ECOlunchbox three-in-one

ECOlunchbox’s Three-in-One

These little stainless pods were genius for prepacking with berries, carrots, almonds and various other good-for-us snacks. We love the optional Furoshiki artisan cloths that act as tote and napkin.

These predesigned meals arrive at your doorstep and couldn’t be simpler, or taste more like real (and far more gourmet than we’d whip up on the fly) food. Pop in the microwave whenever a craving or belly growl hits instead of grabbing that hand of chips or finishing off your kids’ hotdogs. We tried these out and found them very tasty (with a pinch of salt, but we’d rather add a sprinkle than have too much for our taste!). *Full disclosure, we might gotten the munchies and cheated a time or two during the week of testing, but even with the pick-me-up treat here or there, a pound or two flew off to love handle heaven.
