DIY Halloween Style

Published October 12, 2023Admin Only:

Matching halloween costumes of Mario and Luigi

Here are five easy-to-create, popular Halloween looks sure to make a statement for costume season.

Halloween is fast approaching and if you’ve been shopping lately, you know the stores are filling up with flashy costumes reflecting the latest trends. Unfortunately, the price tags are often even flashier.

With the help of Goodwill of Orange County, you can put together iconic Halloween costumes without breaking the bank. All the looks listed are less than $20, including footwear.

Mario and Luigi

After starring in their own movie this year, the famous plumbing brothers are bound to be a hot costume this Halloween. Their iconic looks are easy to replicate with red and green shirts, blue overalls and work boots. All that’s left is to top these outfits off with their signature caps.

Trendy costumes of Barbie and Ken

Barbie and Ken

After the “Barbie” movie was the smash hit blockbuster of the summer, everyone will want to dress as the stars, Barbie and Ken. The duo have so many looks and styles that making a costume of found items from Goodwill will be a breeze. Ken’s whole thing is beach, which has been captured here with fun, graphic board shorts and a color-block tank top. Barbie’s signature color is pink, so definitely make sure to incorporate that when thrifting a costume. Here, she is pictured with a stylish jean jacket, white pants and sparkly purple shoes. Top it all off with some sunglasses and a blonde wig and everyone will be saying, “Hi, Barbie!”

An Ariel costume with a purple shirt and tie-dye skirt

Ariel

Ariel allowed us to be part of her world again this summer with the release of Disney’s live-action version of the iconic movie, “The Little Mermaid.” If your child is looking for something more low-key this Halloween, this Disneybound version of Ariel will do the trick. Disneybounding is the act of dressing as a Disney character in a low-key way. With a purple top to replicate her shell bra and a skirt reminiscent of a mermaid tail, this outfit can be dressed up with a red wig or worn as is for a casual look.

A Taylor Swift Halloween costume styled with heart-shaped sunglasses and a white floral patterned short sleeve shirt

Taylor Swift

The big ticket this year was to Taylor Swift’s epic Eras Tour. People packed into sold-out stadiums all around the country, many of them even wearing some of her top looks. From award show performances to music videos, Swift has amassed a huge collection of outfits to pick from. A key element to any Swift look is sparkle, which is reflected in this fun top. Pair it with some fun sunglasses and shorts and you have a concert-ready look for your kids.

Wednesday Addams

Thanks to her very own Netflix series, Wednesday Addams has been introduced to a whole new generation. A Halloween staple, her outfit is easy to replicate. There are no shortages of vintage dresses at Goodwill. As long as you find one that is dark in color, you can pair it with a white undershirt and black belt. Black Mary Janes are also a must. But no Wednesday outfit is complete without her signature black braids.

Jessica Jardon, from Goodwill of Orange County, assisted with designing these costumes.
