Soka Performing Arts Center starts the year off with a children’s classic: puppets.

Soka Performing Arts Center is starting the year off with puppets.

Not just any puppets, either. The historic Bob Baker Marionettes lands on the Aliso Viejo stage on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023 at 3 pm. It’s a unique form of theater, intended to spark imagination in children while bringing families together for an afternoon of entertainment.

“Arts programming promotes creativity and encourages children to think out of the box,” said Renee Bodie, general manager at Soka Performing Arts Center. “This kind of programming is active and promotes free play where a child can explore their way of looking at the world, free to express who they are. Through arts, children learn a form of self-expression, which helps them to better connect with the world around them.”

It isn’t the first time Bob Baker Marionettes has visited Soka’s stage. There was also a show in 2019 — a huge success, said Bodie.

“Bob Baker Marionettes is the oldest children’s theater company in Los Angeles, and designated a Historic-Cultural Monument for a reason,” Bodie said. “The puppets have been delighting children and adults since 1963 — for over 70 years. Kids get to move around and interact with the beautifully crafted marionettes handled by master puppeteers, that captivate children in simple yet fascinating ways.”

In addition to the marionettes, there will also be a balloon artist to entertain kids 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

“Our mission is to ‘engage, educate and elevate the human spirit,’” said Bodie.

Other Soka Performing Arts Center shows scheduled for 2023 include the Children’s Concert Series with Kiddle Karoo on Sunday, Feb. 19, and The Lucky Band on Sunday, April 16. All children’s concerts start at 3 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children — with a 20 percent discount if you buy three concerts at once.

“Our shows also involve parents, encouraging them to play with their children, another huge boon for helping to create strong bonds with parent and child,” said Bodie.
