Family Fun, Outdoor Activities

Editor’s Picks: July 2020

Published June 29, 2020Admin Only:

PICK OF THE MONTH: Knott’s California Marketplace

Knott’s Berry Farm’s first public “attraction” was its roadside stand, so it makes sense that, during its 100th anniversary, Knott’s re-opens its Marketplace first while exiting its pandemic hiatus. Folks now can go to Marketplace stores and restaurants (like Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, Peanuts Headquarters, Candy Parlour, and The Knott’s Berry Market and Bakery) — and perhaps more of the park will be open too by the time you read this. Knott’s is following state and CDC health guidelines and has implemented safety measures at the Marketplace — including that all employees and guests wear a facial covering while in the Knott’s California Marketplace store locations and restaurants. Masks are not required when eating. Store occupancy is limited to less than 50 percent of the normal building capacity.

Ocean Institute’s Excursions

Set sail for some summer adventures with the Ocean Institute. The popular Public Whale Watching outings, slated to re-launch June 27, will run most Saturdays and Sundays at 10 am (check OI’s website for details and ticket information). Their annual Bioluminescence Night Cruises will embark on July 17-18 (as well as Aug. 21-22) from 8:30 pm-10:30 pm. It’s a memorable way to view the nocturnal world of marine birds, sea lions and bioluminescent plankton.

“Coral Reefs: Nature’s Underwater Cities” Exhibition

The Aquarium of the Pacific invites you to join them on a voyage to the world’s most colorful coral reefs. Discover reefs’ many wonders and their unique inhabitants, as well as the threats that reefs face in today’s world. This expansive exhibition, which continues until April 2021, features glowing corals, new aquarium creatures, a reimagined Tropical Pacific Gallery, and special art displays depicting coral reef environments in the Pacific Visions art gallery, including multimedia projections and digital interactive art.

Anaheim Packing District Drive-In

The Anaheim Packing District continues its “drive-in” entertainment in July. Live music will be served up Friday and Saturday nights (7 pm-9 pm) and Sunday afternoons (1 pm-3 pm). You can order your food online from a participating APD restaurant and have your meal delivered to your car too. Wednesdays (5 pm-7 pm) feature live music and outdoor dining in Farmers Park. Check its website for updated info and other plans (like movies maybe).

Battleship IOWA Outdoor Tours

The historic Battleship IOWA has created two different options for visitors that both fall in line with current public health standards. The self-guided tour comes with free use of the museum’s award-winning mobile app, or you can do a socially distanced, private, guided outdoor museum tour experience. Families can book up to six guests per reservation time. The IOWA is open daily from 10 am-4 pm.
