HUCK FINN FISHING DERBY | August 12th
Sometimes the best way to make family memories is to take the hooplah down a notch. This low tech, old school morning of outdoor fun to share with kids combines one of the most beautiful stretches of OC beach with a little nod to literature for good measure. The best part is, organizers make it easy for first timers – bait will be provided, and a limited number of loaner rods will be available too.
Youngsters (ages 4-15) can have a “reel” fun time while casting for good luck in this fishingcontest. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish caught by kids in the various age divisions. Besides the fishing competition, the Derby will be have a Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher look-alike contest as well as face-painting. Registration is required to participate, and check-in starts at 8 am.

TIDAL POOL TUESDAYS | August 1st & 8th
You don’t have to go to the beach to interact with sea creatures. On August 1, the Ocean Institute stops by Pretend City with it mobile touch pool. Youngsters will get the chance to have some hands-on encounters with some marine animals in this educator-led activity. Then on August 8, Concordia University will bring its marine lab to Pretend City so children can enjoy another interesting, educational tide pool experience.

CARDBOARD BOAT DERBY | August 12th
While it is not America’s Cup-quality racing, the Cardboard Boat Derby has its share of exciting aquatic action. First off, each team must construct their racing vessel by using just two pieces of cardboard, a roll of duct tape and a utility knife. Then, they take to the water and see if they stay afloat long enough to reach the finish line first. All ages are welcome to participate, and teams can consist of four people or less.

DISNEY SUMMER MOVIE SERIES | August 4th, 11th, 18th
Anaheim has been home to Disneyland for over 60 years, and Disneyland is showing its thanks this summer with a lineup of free film screenings that will be held in various Anaheim parks. On August 4, Peter Pan will play at Stoddard Park, while Moana arriving at Eucalyptus Park on August 11. Family can chill with Frozen on August 18 at Twila Reid Park. The evenings will also have carnival games, entertainment and other activities for families to enjoy.

CIVIL WAR DAYS | August 5th – 6th
Families can journey back to the time when America was a divided country during the Civil War Days weekend. Discover what the daily routines were like for Union and Confederate soldiers and view a variety of weapons and artillery, both large and small, that were used in the war. A traveling forge will be on display and there will also be blacksmith demonstrations. Additionally, attendees can hear period music performed by the Cottonwood String Band.
