Parenting OC’s Jamboree 2016
Get Cubed or Be Squared
SANTA ANA, CA – Parenting OC magazine has partnered with Discovery Cube in Santa Ana to present the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Kids’ Summer Opportunities Jamboree event, to take place on March 5, 2016 at the iconic Orange County family destination. Discovery Cube, which expanded this past summer, doubling in size, and adding among other attractions, the 10,000 square-foot Julianne Argyros Showcase Theater, is the leading hands-on science center for families in Southern California. On the day of the Jamboree event, which is free to attend, the Center is also offering free childrens’ passes for admittance to the Cube.
“We wanted to do something big and exciting for our 10th annual Jamboree,” said Parenting OC Media President Randall Tierney, regarding the choice to hold the event at the Cube. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this.”
The Jamboree event, which will take place in the Showcase Theater, features exhibitors specializing in summer fun and learning opportunities for families, including overnight camps, day camps, sports leagues and clinics, outdoor adventures, horse and cattle ranches, surf and swim programs, science and technology camps and more.
“Sending your child off to camp, or to any summer program for the matter, is not something parents do on a whim. At the Jamboree, moms and dads can research and talk with the program leaders and camp directors face-to-face, and get all their questions answered. Then they can head off for a full day of fun at the Cube.” Free passes are available to all children, ages 3 to 14, for admittance on the day of the Jamboree event. The tickets (each valued at $12.95) can be downloaded from www.parentingoc.com.
Admission to the Jamboree is free. Saturday, March 5, 2016, 10 am to 3pm, at Discovery Cube, 2500 N. Main St., Santa Ana, CA, 92705. For more information, call 714-630-4510 x 6.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Parenting OC’s Jamboree 2015
Some of OC’s most talented young performers set to take the stage
IRVINE, CA — The entertainment lineup for Parenting OC Magazine’s ninth annual Summer Opportunities Jamboree has been announced and you won’t want to miss it! The event will take place Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015 at the Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School in Irvine from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A variety of exhibitors are expected, representing summer camps, after-school activities and summer programs at preschools and private schools—providing parents the opportunity to plan ahead and learn more about OC-wide activities and programs that their children can be a part of.
The Kidpalooza Stage at the event will feature a variety of artists from different cultures showcasing their unique skills. This year’s featured artist—and the January cover story in Parenting OC—is YouTube sensation Skylar Stecker, a singer/songwriter from Irvine who is taking Radio Disney by storm. At 12 years old, Stecker has already made a name for herself in the music industry by writing her own songs and performing at local venues like the Roxy Theater. With over 10 million views on her YouTube channel and her EP “Firecracker” scheduled to come out Jan. 27, she is not stopping any time soon. Following her performance, she will be hosting a Q&A with the audience.
Other entertainers will also be exhibiting their talents. Twelve-year-old Sean Le of MasterChef Junior fame will be giving a cooking demonstration. This culinary wonderkid is an OC native, residing in Santa Ana. He started cooking five years ago after watching his mom cook Vietnamese food in their home.
Twins brothers Kyle and Benjamin Sharp make up Sharp Turn Ahead, a duo that moved to Laguna Beach from Texas in 2009. The brothers have since performed at Laguna’s Sawdust Festival, the Orange County Fair, Laguna Hills Mall, the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Knott’s Berry Farm, exposing them to local teens and growing their fan base. Their EP “Just for You” was released last April and their latest single “Back to Summer” came out in October.
Other entertainers include dancers from the Thistle Academy of Irish Dance, which teaches children an art deeply rooted in Irish cultural traditions; UC Irvine’s Jodaiko Japanese Drumming Ensemble, a group that passionately performs the art of Taiko; and hosting venue Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School’s own TVT Garage Band. El Rancho Charter School’s Concert Band will perform modern pop songs and Lost in Atlantis will play a set of rock music with the message that goals are unstoppable when you believe in yourself.
The Jamboree Spelling Bee will begin at 10 a.m., with some of the best spellers in OC representing their school in the hopes of winning the grand prize. Students in third through fifth grades will compete in a multi-round competition. Sandra Cabouat, TVT’s Dean of Lower School, will judge the competition once again.
“While the audience sits quietly in anticipation over each round, it is truly amazing to see these 4th and 5th grade students from all different schools cheer each other on and rise to the occasion of the competition. Students practice all year for this and often compete at the school beforehand in order to attend the Jamboree, so it is a grand accomplishment to just take part,” said Cabouat.
Parents will also have the opportunity to enter their children in the Cutest Kid Cover Contest with the chance to appear on the cover of an upcoming issue of Parenting OC Magazine. Categories will include Cutest Baby, Cutest Kid and Cutest Tween. Children will be photographed at the event then winners will be chosen by an online voting process beginning in March.
Exhibitors already scheduled to appear include Academy at the Sea, Brain Balance, Camp James, Camp Med-O-Lark, Catalina Island Camps, Child Development Inc., Crazzy’s Wasewagon, Discovery Cube, Farm Fresh, ID Tech, Lazy W Ranch, Mariners Church Preschool, Smile Wide, Super Camp and Tarbut V’Tora.

Parenting OC Magazine Announces Readers’ Choice Winners
ORANGE, CA—The winners of Parenting OC Magazine’s 9th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards have been determined. The selections were made by the magazine’s readership based on their top family picks in 80 different categories. Among the top winners: Disneyland, Irvine Regional Park, Huntington Beach Central Library and the Discovery Science Center.
Readers voted for a winner in North and South Orange County for each category, more than doubling the number of places selected to represent the county’s family favorites. Voters remained loyal in many categories, as almost one-third of the picks are places that have previously won Parenting OC Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award.
The expanded categories allowed for some new favorites, though. Seascape Kids Fun, an entertainment center that recently opened up in Anaheim, took home the award in five categories.
“The readers have spoken, and I think you will find their choices more interesting than any list the editors of Parenting OC Magazine could have compiled,” said Publisher Randall Tierney. “There are a few surprises, but you will have to pick up a copy to find out,” he added. The Readers’ Choice results will be featured in the September issue of Parenting OC Magazine, which will be available Tuesday, September 6. Readers can also find the results already published online at www.ParentingOC.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Free Back-to-School Whooping Cough Shot at Parenting & Kids Expo
ORANGE, CA—Free whooping cough booster shots will be provided at the Parenting & Kids Expo to fulfill the school requirement for 7th through 12th graders. Courtesy of the Orange County Chapter of the AAP, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the Orange County Department of Education and the UC Irvine Family Health Center Mobile Clinic, shots will be given to the first 500 children at the event.
To receive the vaccine, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and must provide an immunization record (a yellow card). The booster shot will be administered by medical professionals from the UC Irvine Family Health Center Mobile Clinic.
With several recent outbreaks of pertussis in the past two years and approximately 5,000 California residents diagnosed with the disease in 2010, last summer former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law the requirement that students entering grades 7 through 12 in fall 2011 must receive an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (known as Tdap).
Children who do not provide proof of immunization to their school within the first 30 days of class will not be able to attend, and some schools require proof of immunization by the first day with no 30-day grace period. Currently, 179,000 OC students still require this vaccine.
Tdap protects against pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and diphtheria. By immunizing school-aged children, parents protect their children and the greater community from whooping cough, which is a highly contagious disease that causes coughing fits spanning several months in duration.
Children and infants are the most commonly affected. In 2010, the California outbreak of whooping cough resulted in 10 infant deaths.
The Parenting & Kids Expo is a free event offering entertainment and fun for the whole family with a Back-to-School fashion show, live performances and over 60 exhibitors. It will take place at the District in Tustin on Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
