Q: [School-Aged] My son struggled with ADHD and his cousin has been diagnosed on the spectrum. My sister and I dread trips to the dentist because both boys have issues, for different reasons, being comfortable to be still and confined for the dentist or hygienist to do their work. How can we help them relax and make visits go more smoothly?
A: It is important to work together, as a partner with the dentist and staff. Collaborating is the key to making the appointment successful. Call ahead of time and notify the doctor of your child’s condition so that everyone can prepare to make the visit a pleasant experience for your child. Ask for a tour of office and meet the dentist, prior to your visit. This can help your child feel comfortable in the office before the scheduled appointment.
Prepare in advance and bring all your child’s information including medical forms, health history, a list of medications your child is taking and the pediatrician’s information. Be ready to discuss your child’s treatment and your goals for the visit.
Consider a pretend visit with your child at home. Use a toothbrush and mirror and explain to your child that the dentist will be looking at his/her teeth.
Find a pediatric dentist. They specialize in children’s dentistry and their offices are generally equipped with games, toys and TV’s to entertain children during their visits. Always keep a positive attitude and avoid saying “everything will be fine.” Use caution when speaking and avoid using the words “shot”, “hurt” and “pain”. Assure your child that by end of the dental appointment their teeth will look nice and healthy.
Portray the dentist as a hero who will be making their teeth clean and healthy. Try to speak in a mild tone and be positive about the visit. Try to schedule your dental appointments in the morning; when kids are not restless. A good night’s sleep night before the visit is always best.
Some children may need certain treatments to relax. Some dentist can provide nitrous oxide to help make children more comfortable in the office. This should be discussed in advance with the dentist and prior to the scheduled appointment.
These are just a few things that will contribute to a more comfortable patient-doctor visit. It is important to help our children have a wonderful experience. Together we can make a difference!
