Middle College High School, Santa Ana
When a teacher was struggling with last-minute event prep, Andrea Alvarez stepped in, reorganized the schedule and made sure everything was ready on time.
When a parent called, distressed about a missed deadline, Alvarez worked late to resolve the issue and find a solution.
As office manager at Middle College High School — located at Santa Ana College — Alvarez is a key point person between Santa Ana Unified School District and the college system. The partnership between the district and college allows students to get a personalized high school experience in a college setting. All students are dual enrolled at both Middle College High School and Santa Ana College.
“She just makes sure everything is running smoothly,” said Laura Compton, who teaches biology, video game design and esports. “Our students require so much more than the normal high school student.”
Alvarez has been working in education for 25 years. Her day-to-day duties depend on the specific needs of the school — but the list is long. Some of her duties include administrative support; answering emails, phone calls and inquiries; maintaining and managing the school’s budget; processing invoices, receipts and payments; planning and assisting with school events like Open House, Back to School, Senior Awards Night and Graduation; coordinating maintenance and repairs with both Santa Ana College and Santa Ana Unified School District; making sure the office runs efficiently; keeping paperwork organized and responding to any immediate administrative needs.
“Andrea is a favorite among students and parents alike. Parents regularly express their gratitude for her kindness and efficiency, and students know they can count on her for guidance. She creates a welcoming environment that makes the school feel like a second home for many. Andrea Alvarez is much more than an office manager — she is the heart of our school. Her multiple roles, contributions beyond her job description, personal passion and years of service make her an outstanding candidate for this award,” Compton wrote in her nomination essay.
Alvarez said she has deep gratitude for her colleagues, family and husband. She said she feels very honored and overjoyed that she was nominated — and won.
“What motivates me most is seeing the positive impact I can have on people’s lives — whether it’s helping make an event come together smoothly, solving a problem or just being there for someone when they need it. It’s really rewarding to know that my efforts can make a difference, no matter how big or small. Plus, I enjoy the variety that comes with the role — every day brings something new,” she said.
Compton continued in the essay that Alvarez’s ability to manage complex logistics while maintaining her regular duties is a testament to her exceptional organizational skills and dedication.
“Her passion for the MCHS community is evident in the personal care she brings to her work. Andrea consistently goes above and beyond to support students, staff and parents. … She knows the school inside and out, and her knowledge and resourcefulness make her indispensable. Her calm and approachable demeanor ensures that everyone — students, parents and staff — feels comfortable seeking her help.”
