Spoil Your Dog Day Treats

Homemade dog treat recipe
Recipe and Photography By Madison Amirehteshami

Dog treats have evolved significantly over the years. Historically, dogs were given table scraps as rewards. In the early 20th century, the popularity of commercial dog food led to the development of dedicated dog treats. Aug. 10 is National Spoil Your Dog Day and what could be sweeter for your pup than homemade treats? Plus, they’re much healthier than store-bought treats and made with just four ingredients. Now let’s get to baking, little chefs!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 tbsp ground flax meal
  • 1 1/3 cups oat flour*
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, flax meal and cinnamon into a food processor or blender.
  3. Add in the oat flour and process until a dough forms.
  4. Lightly flour a cutting board and roll out the dough (¼-inch thick). Use cookie-cutters or a knife to cut as many pieces as you can and place them onto a parchment-lined baking tray. Gather the remaining dough and repeat until all the dough is used.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Let them cool on a cooling rack and then store in the fridge for one week or freezer for two months.

Notes:

*If you don’t have oat flour on-hand, use rolled oats and blend in a high-speed blender until it is a flour consistency.
