Yes, it’s back-to-school time, but it’s also still summer. Orange County provides the perfect solution to both kinds of activities at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. There you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn your way through some ocean-themed fun and adventure. Here’s just a sampling of what you can plan:
Family Science Night
Learn from expert naturalists how whales, birds and humans navigate yearly migrations, explore the deep sea, or chart a course for adventure.
Ocean Education Center Tour
You’ll have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of one of the learning centers with an expert Ocean Institute naturalist. You will see a select number of the institute’s living collection of animals, which represent the local marine ecology.
Maddie James Seaside Learning Center Tour
On this tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the dockside Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. You can participate in one of the institute’s community science projects to document the water quality of the harbor, collect a plankton sample, and get a taste of some of the local species of animals in the biodiversity lab.
Pilgrim Tour
Step aboard one of the institute’s historic tall ships, the brig Pilgrim, made famous by Richard Henry Dana Jr. in his classic memoir, “Two Years Before the Mast.” You’ll have the opportunity to step into the life of a sailor aboard a tall ship and learn the history of the replica.
Sailor’s Life Tour
Experience the life of an 1830s sailor on the institute’s historic maritime wharf. Tie nautical knots, help raise the sail and learn more about the hide trade of early California.
Spirit of Dana Point
Set sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and experience California from the perspective of an early tall ship explorer. Join the crew to help raise sail, handle lines and steer the ship, or simply sit back, relax and enjoy the majesty of sailing the seas aboard a tall ship.
Whale & Marine Life Tours
Explore the ocean with marine educators, searching for some of the world’s largest and smallest creatures, including dolphins and whales, during this 2.5-hour long marine life exploration cruise.
Family Field Trips
Looking for fun for the entire family? Join the Ocean Institute for one of its interactive, hands-on field trip programs tailored for the family to enjoy. Family Field Trips allow families to explore together as they learn about the local marine habitat.
