Michelle Lambright
Woodland Elementary School Costa Mesa
Kirsten Aguilar , Parent
Teaching 25 crazy kindergarteners how to begin to navigate their educational journey can not be easy! But somehow Mrs. Michelle Lambright make it seem to be so. She emulates joy for what she does, from her high fives to every child down the line at morning line-up, to her bubbly voice that you can hear from a far, gently rounding up her class. Our son has had educational struggles that she picked up on and is working to support him with, starting with his first weeks in her class. This was a relief because we did not know what to expect from a public school experience. Mrs. Lambright makes learning fun – our son does not stop talking about or “playing” school when he’s home. He repeats her fun letter and character songs. Mrs. Lambright makes her class an adventure and shows kindness for every child in her charge. After over 20 years teaching this age, she certainly has not let any of it get to her – we are thrilled to have her educating our child! We recently encountered a family no longer at the school and when they found out Mrs. Lambright was our son’s teacher, the comment was “We love her! She was our son’s teacher and taught him so much! She even came to visit him and bring him a balloon after having his tonsils taken out!”. Thank you Mrs. Lambright for being an important and pivotal educator for our children.

Julie Dent
Bonita Canyon Elementary School Irvine
Naomi Sognefest, Parent
From Megan Sognefest – student Ms. Dent is the best teacher I have ever had. She made me love reading and writing last year in third grade. I even did creative writing with her and others kids in my class this summer. She is strict but loving. She also came to my singing performances, and to my friends’ basketball and soccer games. From Naomi Sognefest – parent I think Ms. Dent is one of the most remarkable teachers I have ever come across in my lifetime (and I have a law degree and a master’s degree). She is so invested in her students and truly wants each and every one of them to succeed. She has high expectations of them but is more than willing to take the time to nurture them in order to help them reach those expectations. In world where the methods of teaching are changing to meet the common core benchmarks, and in California where the funding per student is one of the lowest in the country, we need to acknowledge and reward outstanding teachers. Ms. Dent is one of them. She takes the time to get to know her students and is interested in helping them to learn and to become better individuals. I have often heard how students in her class, Megan included, come home from school and write stories … Just for fun! How incredible is that? She even has over a dozen children from her class choose to meet with her a handful of times over the summer to work on creative writing. The kids CHOSE to! Ms. Dent also passes out a paper at the beginning of the school year that students may fill out with requests for her to come to watch something that they do – sporting event, acting performance, music recital, etc. I know that if a child submits a request, Ms. Dent almost always shows up. If you are familiar with children, you know how much it means for them to have their teacher’s support in that way. She is also in charge of the school garden where kids can come before school and help her tend to it. For years, before the PTA helped to fund it, she was using her personal funds for the garden because she knew how much a garden could enrich some children’s lives. In sum, Julie Dent is truly a fantastic teacher and our school is lucky to have her. Thank you for having the outstanding teachers issue and for giving the community an opportunity to offer our opinions and insight.

All of Mrs. Davidson’s kids love her! She is kind, considerate and incredibly patient with the 2nd graders that she teaches. She spends time with the kids that need extra help, and is always loving. As you watch her teach, you can tell that teaching is her passion in life and you can see her love for the kids she teaches. Every day older kids that have graduated her class come by to say hi – and the littles that go into her classroom always have a hug and a smile for her. She is such an awesome teacher and we are so glad that we have been blessed by her teaching.

Chatom Arkin’s enthusiasm in and out of the classroom is contagious. He is a diligent worker who has shown continued creativity and enthusiasm thought the school year. Chatom is a teacher who is constantly challenging himself to improve. He is never satisfied by simply resting on successful laurels of the past, and constantly pushes himself and others to expand the breadth of understanding and implementation of innovative teaching methods in the classroom. I have only known Chatom for a year, but he has already made an impact on my teaching methods and my ideas for further curriculum development.

Mrs. Cariker is so patient. She has an ability to gain and keep the attention of all of her students. She knows the heart of each precious little soul in her class. She volunteers her time to help with student clubs and organizations that help students develop skills and provides opportunities we can use in the future. She has been so helpful to so many and especially to me over the past four years, she has trained me and even helped me achieve my dream of attending the Culinary Institute of America after graduation. It is my honor to nominate Ms. Lisa Driggers for Top Teacher 2016

She is a great teacher, my daughter is always speaking about Mrs Cook and how she spends time with her reading. She takes time to explain to us parents the progress of our child and how to help her develop her skills. She’s also staying extra hours to help some of the students that need a little extra to get to their targets. Honestly, one of the best teachers I’ve known.

Mr. McNeil is the best teacher that my daughter has ever had! He is excited about teaching, is interesting to listen to, communicates well with parents, and utilizes technology in lots of different ways in his 6th grade classroom. The kids have made short movies using I-pads, learned interesting facts about history on the internet, and learned ahead in math using Kahn academy. He really cares about the kids in his class and how they are doing in school and in return, my daughter is working harder at school than ever before, to make him proud. We need more teachers like this one!

Mrs. Walker is wildly enthusiastic about Social Studies and her team teacher, Mrs. Coffin, is just as passionate about Science! Between the two, the students get the best of both in this amazing fourth grade team-teaching partnership. As parents, we sometimes worry about team-teaching arrangements, but this one works seamlessly. They are both top-notch teachers and as a team they are excellent at being consistent with the same classroom rules, checking the same e-mail, and being present for special events. My son and daughter both had these two amazing teachers for fourth grade and still want to go back to visit them regularly because these two women clearly cared about them when they were in fourth grade and still care about them now.
Mona Adlparvar
Jeane Thorman Elementary Tustin
Parent
Mrs. Adlparvar was a ray of sunshine from the first moment we met her. On the first day of kindergarten, Mrs. “A” was so comforting to both me and my daughter. Mrs. “A” welcomed my daughter with open arms and every student she had. She was instrumental in transitioning my daughter from being with me (a work from home but mostly a stay at home mom, who spent all day with her, every day), to a real school setting. We had struggled to get my daughter to feel unafraid about school, with bouts of crying and clinging to me and my husband when we attempted to introduce her to daycare, and CDC for Summer school as she got older. Everything we tried failed and we had to pull her from any form of school, including preparatory Preschool. My daughter was so used to being basically an only child with me all day, other than trips to the grocery store, parks to play, that sort of thing, that she was so scared to go to school and be with new people and a new place. We come from a very small family family. I have no little girls for her to play with, and her brother is 10 years her senior. Mrs. “A” made school fun and interesting, and importantly helped my Maria to succeed. My daughter excelled in Mrs. A’s class rapidly, and never came home crying or upset. She was always excited to go to school, and each day she learned so many things! my daughter was reading well before the half-way point in kindergarten. I was so impressed with her progress! I highly recommend Mrs. Adlparar for this recognition as she is a wonderful teacher, and kind to all.

Mr. Baker is a one of a kind middle school teacher. His love of teaching is evident every day when he walks in the classroom or interacts with students. Teaching is a passion for him. He wants students to strive to be the best that they can be. Individualized learning is key to his educational model. Mr. Baker works long hours whether teaching in the classroom, grading assignments or in conferences to ensure the success of his students. Both of my children are better students because of Mr. Baker.
Patricia Van Deudekom
New Horizon School, Irvine Irvine
Dana Asad, Parent
“I am so honored and awed for being recognized, and hugely humbled! I appreciate being nominated so much, and that alone is a win!” Teaching kindergarten at New Horizon School, Irvine for 14 years now, Mrs. Patricia Van Deudekom has been a landmark and a corner stone of our school. Her presence positively impacts every student at the school, reaching beyond the kindergarten class she teaches. “My mission is to really inspire children to love learning and be compassionate with one another.” She does this every moment of every day. Growing up amongst 13 siblings, she herself is inspired by the strength of her mother. “She taught me patience and love. Making sure to always have time for each of us, while always having food at the table.” That one to one connection is the secret of her success: “making that real connection is important,” and she uses that to empower each child in a personalized way that caters to each child’s individuality. She makes every child feel like they are the only one in class. “I feel that kindergarten is when the students really blossom.” Under her loving direction, the children really do. Planting the seeds of success, many of the students go on to win awards in Math, English and Science. She takes a wide range of kids from not recognizing the alphabet to reading and writing way above grade level by the end of the year! She gives them the strong foundation that they need to be successful students with a real love of learning. Beyond academic growth, Mrs. Van Deudekom makes sure that every child grows socially and embodies the principles of being positive leaders and companionate individuals. Yet she is always ready for a hug, an encouraging smile, and a word of advice; to students, faculty and parents alike! An asset to the school, she is wholeheartedly loved by all. “God has a plan and things happen for a reason”. We are blessed and so greatful to have her as part of the New Horizon family.

Patricia Van Deudekom New Horizon School-Irvine-KG “To really inspire the love of learning and to be compassionate to one another” This is the mission statement that Mrs. Van Deudekom came up with to guide her through her teaching. Her bright smile and wonderful heart is what first greets you when you meet her. Over the past 14 years of teaching Kindergarten at our school, Mrs Van Deudekom has touched the lives of hundreds of our children. They walk into her classroom the first day with only the basics of knowledge and lots of concerns, she then does her magic and every kid transforms into a young and knowledgeable future leader who is ready to embark on to their next steps. By incorporating the Leader In Me program into her daily class life, she manages to inspire her kids to become the proud leaders of the future. “Kindergarten is the year where everything blossoms”, those are the words she used to describe her reason behind teaching Kindergarten year after year. “I love to see the excitement of the kids when they are learning. When they are excited, I’m excited and it always makes my day”. Through hands on learning and positive discipline she manages to engage every student in her classroom. She is also the motherly figure in the classroom, making sure they are all healthy eaters, feeling well and socially happy. Her passion is “getting kids to love school, many kids want to give up because they feel unsuccessful but making them feel successful is part of what I do”. Each kid feels as special and as cared for as everyone else, as Mrs Van Deudekom dedicates her time and energy to make each kid feel unique. As parents, we know that our kids’ first teacher always sets the tone for the future, and with Mrs Van Deudekom, we find it very difficult to say goodbye at the end of the year because she not only teaches our kids, but she also teaches us how to bring out the best in our own children. With tears of both joy and sadness she honors each one of those kids at their graduation, as she sends them off to the real world like a proud mother. She is our superhero and teaching is her super power. “It awes me and humbles me too….I’m honored and I feel so appreciated to be the one nominated, I am so excited, thank you so much”. Mrs. Van Deudekom….we thank YOU.

Mr. Easter is the best math/science teacher I have ever had. After years of easily passing my classes in those subjects with no actual comprehension of the material, I am now learning how to learn- Mr. Easter insists that we understand the concepts behind the lessons we are learning, and works to ensure that we cannot get by without such knowledge. I had him for Chemistry last year, and this year I have him for both Physics and AP Calculus. I remember coming home after the first day of school and actually being excited to know that I was going to need to work hard this year. It’s a really good feeling to succeed in Mr. Easter’s class, because is well-known that there are no easy A’s granted. Despite this, his students are extremely prepared. He’s always willing to give extra help to those who ask for it, and is personally invested in the success of each student. Apart from academics, he coaches the cross-country team, and goes to almost every single sports game at our school to show his support for athletics, and even runs the scoreboard at volleyball games. Mr. Easter in an incredible teacher( he wears his CVCS Calculus shirt on a weekly basis) and an ardent supporter of the success of his students, both athletically and academically. However, the primary reason I believe he deserves this award is his willingness to relate to the students on a personal level. Last year my family went through an extremely difficult time, and he was extremely understanding and gracious to me about my schoolwork during that period in my life. He clearly valued me above the work that I could produce in his class, and told me multiple times that he was praying for my family and me. I really hope he is chosen- he truly deserves it, and an award like this would stick with him for a long time. Thank you for your consideration

When I was a freshman, I was interested in two things- sports and plowing through my classes with as little effort and experience as possible. In order to graduate everybody had to either take one year of art, or one year of musical theater. Since I thought I was too cool to stand on stage and sing, I decided it would be much easier to fly under the radar in art than in theater, so I chose the former. Mrs. Thompson saw this attitude coming from a mile away, and she knew how to deal with it. She is the only teacher who I have ever had who possessed a perfect balance of positive reinforcement when I was feeling frustrated and plain honesty when I just wasn’t giving good effort. She transformed my attitude about art and my attitude about school and hard work in general. She has always been supportive and there for us. During my Junior year she battled breast cancer and had to leave half way through the year for treatment. She told us she would be back, and she was true to her word. She has made me fall in love with art and has motivated me through 3 more years of art than I originally intended. I think that she is eligible for this award because I can’t imagine any one else being more worthy.
Francine Bless
Van Buren Elementary Placentia
Karen Christensen, Parent
Francine Bless has been a teacher for 32+ years and is presently a third grade teacher with the Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District. There are a number of reasons that I feel my daughter’s teacher is deserving of this honor. To begin, she gives our children a sense of pride and independence in a somewhat unconventional way. During their quiet reading time, she allows them to take off their shoes, sit under their desk or lay on the floor. Who doesn’t like to curl up with a great book? I think allowing them to get comfortable gives them a sense of importance, makes them prideful and redirects the focus from having to read a book quietly to making it an actual enjoyable experience. Secondly, her style brings to my mind, “a school without walls”. On Wednesday’s the homework includes no electronics until after 6:00 pm. She encourages free play, puzzles, art, etc., and as a bonus, kids are awarded Starsbucks for sharing with the class on Thursdays what they did on Wednesday afternoons. Unbeknownst to the kids, these show and tell sessions transition to public speaking opportunities and a way for the class to interact socially with one another. My daughter used her Starsbucks to buy the opportunity to read to a first grade class. How awesome is that! Last but not least, Mrs Bless assigned homework on the Veterans Day holiday and asked that each child go to a veterans park, monument or memorial to honor our veterans. Another parent and I took our three daughters to Veteran’s Park in Yorba Linda and unbeknownst to us our timing was just prior to a formal ceremony. Our daughter had the opportunity to meet a general and I wish I could upload a photo to show the volumes this experience spoke to our girls. Had it not been for Mrs Bless’ assignment it’s likely that I would not have visited the Veteran’s Park. Her teachings reach far beyond the classroom walls and the schoolyard and I am extremely grateful that my daughter has Mrs. Bless as her third grade teacher. There are many more reasons I could share but to say that my daughter is exactly where she needs to be would summarize it best. Thank you so much for allowing me to nominate this fabulous lady!

Amy Choi

Ms. Amy Choi puts every bit of her heart into her work! She tells her students they are a “part” of her, and she misses them when they can’t make it to school. She tells them, “I’m so sorry you weren’t here yesterday, it was like my glasses weren’t here!” Her little first graders think that is so funny, and love to be at school with her, so no parts of her are “missing.” In the very first part of the year, my daughter was experiencing a lot of anxiety about going to school and leaving my side. One day I gave in and let her stay home. I had to take my son to school, and I bumped into Ms. Choi. My eyes were full of tears in frustration with my daughter’s situation. She immediately pulled out her cell phone and asked to call her. She was able to reach her on my husband’s phone, as I was still at the school. She told her how much she hoped she was feeling better, and that she was really hoping that Katie would be able to make it back to school soon. Well that is all my daughter needed. I got home, and she was dressed and ready to come right to school. I was so touched that Ms. Choi didn’t hesitate in trying to make the situation better for my daughter, and my daughter was thrilled to receive a call from her teacher! Additionally, Ms. Choi keeps us in the loop all day long. She uses “Class Dojo,” and often snaps pictures of the students to send to the parents. We love that! She participates in all of our school events, and even came to our school’s movie night. The kids were thrilled to see their teacher outside of school hours, she even brought her kids! Her classroom is beautiful, and is forever changing with new beautifully assembled art projects. Academically, she loves to push the kids. She knows they are bright, and are capable of so much! She expects them to be polite and respectful. When she needs to correct a child, it is done privately and respectfully. The kids who have done really well on their Accelerated Reading tests, get to have lunch with her in the teacher’s lounge. That is a big privilege! She cares about the little details in her students day that make it fun – like grading with scented markers, using funny voices when she reads, giving them fun stickers, and so much more. I especially loved how she explained a big project our school did this past Christmas. We asked the entire school to assemble socks to give to the homeless via the Mercy House. She explained to her first graders that not everyone has the same opportunities that a lot of us at Los Coyotes have, and that it is so important that we help others. The kids were excited to help, and did such a terrific job! She always has a smile on her face, and greets everyone with a warm, welcoming smile. She is fabulous, and worthy of so many awards!

My daughter begs to go to school. I know this is because her teacher, Ms. Karraker makes learning come alive with the integration of technology. Not only does my daughter get challenged in reading, math and writing, she also has opportunities to code using Scratch Jr, build STEM projects and share her work via her student blog. Ms. Karraker has taught my daughter to ask good questions, problem solve and collaborate with others and I couldn’t be happier. Ms. Karraker makes learning fun! She recently brought in the OSMO which is a unique gaming accessory for the iPAD. It reinforces math and literacy skills in a hands on way. Students in her class also conduct science experiments. Last Monday, my daughter couldn’t wait to go to school to see if the petals of the flower were going to change from the colored water. I’m thankful my daughter doesn’t sit at a desk all day and listen to lecture the way I did when I was little. In additional to effectively incorporating educational technology, she somehow meets the needs of all her students. As a parent, you sometimes worry if your child will fall through the cracks if they are advanced or behind, but in Ms. Karraker’s class, that doesn’t seem to be an issue. Her reading groups are strategic and right at each child’s level. The growth my daughter has made in reading this year is amazing. The feedback I received on my daughter as a reader at our last conference was detailed and on point. She had analyzed multiple assessments and had a clear grasp on what my daughter needed to continue her reading growth. Ms. Karraker is an innovative teacher who is constantly looking for ways to enhance learning in her classroom. I don’t think she realizes how great she really is especially since she is a new teacher, which is why I would like to nominate her to become a Top Teacher of Orange County. The only downside to having Ms. Karraker as a first grade teacher is that she will be tough to follow and my daughter has a lot of grades to go!

Mrs. (Polly) Gryske was the teacher for two of my daughter’s in Kindergarten and she was beyond fabulous. Her level of effort goes above and beyond teaching Kindergarten. She truly cares about every single student and takes the time to make sure they give their best effort. She is a cheerleader for every child who walks through her door! Mrs. Gryske spent an inordinate amount of time with the parent’s making sure that they knew what their child needed to work on and taking lots of time to praise all that they did well. She monitored their progress in such a way that one would think she only had ten students and not thirty. Both of my children made great strides while in her classroom and I believe they thrive today because of their great start with Mrs. Gryske. To this day, she always smiles and offers some kind words every time she sees them walk the halls of this great school.

Mrs. Collins is both a teacher and a mother, and this shows in the way she relates to her students. Her energy is very high, she is engaging and fun, and encourages her students to grow in their capabilities and confidence. She is a great fit for third grade because she knows this is a pivotal year for academic learning as well as social interactions. My third grader says “Mrs. Collins is my favorite teacher because she loves teaching. It shows in her smiles, her patience, and her joy in our class.” Despite her youth and energy, she can be serious in a supportive way, and really cares about each student. We just love Mrs. Gorney. She has been teaching for over 30 years, and despite hurting her back this year, she has continued to teach and care about her students despite being temporarily absent. (No doubt she injured her back bending down to hug her students!) We were thrilled to get Mrs. Gorney because she is born to be a teacher. Long before my son had her, I noticed that her students came out of class with small affirmations on pieces of paper, encouraging them for sitting quietly, writing dilligently, and treating each other well. This positive affirmation is so important, and is just one of a zillion examples of her caring. She has taken individual students in need under her wing, working with them before and after school. Her passion for teaching is just so evident. I have not met a single person more suited to attending to first graders, instilling in them discipline and confidence daily, with complete sweetness and patience. My 7 year old son says: “Mrs. Gorney is so patient, and is friendly to everyone. She always has a smile on her face, and she loves everyone. I love Mrs. Gorney so much.” So do the parents! Mrs. Gorney is such an amazing teacher! This is our family’s send time with her. Our first daughter McKenna struggled with reading going from kindergarten to first grade and Mrs. Gorney took time out of her mornings before school to sit with her and get her on track with everyone else. It was a true life saver for us, she is now in third grade and loves to read. Our Daughter Brooklyn is in her class now as a first grader. When I saw that she had her as a teach this year I was relieved! Our twins were born a month early and have had trouble with keeping on task and staying focused, but sure enough Mrs. Gorney has worked with her on her issues and she is doing great in school. I am so thankful for her and everything she has done for our girls. She deserves this!!!

Mrs. Gorney is a wonderful teacher. My son was nervous about starting first grade. What I like about Mrs. Gorney , she teaches the kids to be independent. I notice she’s very observant with every child points out the positive to the kids which is great way to keep them motivated. When my son was in kindergarden he never wanted to go to school, he would cried sometimes he would always say to me wouldn’t understand. This year is all about going, look forward to going to school. I ask him what about teacher. His response ” my teacher is very nice ” and always tells me what he learned that day.

Mrs. Gorney deeply cares about each of her students. In her view, there is no such thing as a “bad kid.” She has made a tremendous impact on my son’s desire to go to school everyday, learn and be respectful to everyone. Her ability to command a class of 30+ first graders (the great majority boys) without even raising her voice is impressive. Her dedication to her students is unwavering. I feel blessed that my son has such a wonderful role model.

Mrs. Gorney is such a special teacher and person. When I attended out first parents night I wasn’t sure what to expect but I left the meeting feeling jealous of my son. I wanted to repeat 1st grade with him! People have asked me to describe Mrs. Gorney and the best way to describe her is a modern day Mary Poppins. She is gentle but firm. Fun but serious when necessary and extremely organized and on top of things. She is patient, encouraging, thoughtful and approachable. Her warm nature endears her to anyone who meets her. I have never seen any one take such command of a room of 32 1st graders and have their rapt attention. One of the greatest messages she gave us as parents on that first night is that she believes in all of our kids and in us as parents. She set our expectations for the school year with that one simple statement and I am so grateful my son is able to learn and grow with her this year.

Mrs. Gorney is amazing. She is always so warm and kind with her 1st grade class children. Instead of having a “treasure” box, which many 1st grade classrooms have, Mrs. Gorney rewards the children immediately with slips of paper acknowledging the good behavior that she noticed. The slips may say “I caught you reading” or “I caught you being kind” or “I love how clean you keep your desk”. The children love being noticed for doing their best and it’s a great motivator for continued good behavior. I have had 2 of my children have Mrs. Gorney, and we adore her and love her teaching style and high expectations that the children rise to achieve.

Cris Wilson, Parent
I nominate Kyle Russo as Top OC Teacher for your OC Parenting next issue. Mr. Russo embodies the true spirit of teaching and opening minds. His style of teaching is unique and fun. Humor always helps. All students – whether they are outgoing or shy, thrive in his classroom. He knows how to motivate them; laughter, focus and responsibility are easily woven into his every lesson. He is always supportive of PTA activities and events (parents respect him while the students adore him). He never hesitates to make time to transform into any silly character to promote academics and family time (Walk-to-School, Read Across America, Jog-a-Thon, Bingo, etc.). Additionally, he donates his time by playing (with his dad band, Five Foot Rabbit for FREE) at the school’s fundraisers. He is a father of two wonderful kids and married to another teacher. Teaching is his passion! It permeates through all facets of his life. His colleagues follow his lead; he’s the top, go-to science guy, the top, go-to math guy, the top, go-to technology guy. He never stops learning and sharing his knowledge. A true measure of the quality of someone’s work is the difference that person makes in other people’s lives. Thousands of students are walking testimonials for his love of teaching. A high percentage of elementary kids move on to AP classes and higher math classes. Once they transition to middle school, these students are known as “Mr. Russo’s kids”. I’m a parent of a soon-to-be HS student, who still thinks fondly of Mr. Russo (Teacher of the Year at Bathgate not long ago and deservingly so). My son and his friends still talk about Mr. Russo and exalting his virtues. His stories live on and proved to be life lessons. For example, my son tutors math at Newhart and is using some of the teaching methods that he learned in Mr. Russo’s class. Mr. Russo is the type of teacher that children and parents never forget and often recall. He’s everybody’s friend and an incredibly giving human being. He is a TEACHER who does not look for recognition, but deserves it over and over again. He is your Top OC ParentungTeacher! PS. He has a messy desk, but perfect in every other way. :-)

Mr. Burridge (AKA Mr.B) was my son Aaron’s 4th grade teacher. Aaron still raves about him two years later. Mr. B was amazing at motivating the kids and getting them excited about learning and challenging them to do their best. Aaron was always thrilled to go to school and often talked about the “cool” things Mr.B did in class. He made all the subjects fun and helped build confidence in Aaron who was new at the school. He approached every subject in a positive manner and really encouraged reading. Aaron was reading tons of books every month and that is when his love for reading truly began. In the particular case of my son, he has been more than a teacher and more of mentor. The letters of recommendation that he wrote on my son’s behalf to different universities speak wonders of someone that took his time to get to know a student inside and out, sometimes sacrificing his own personal (family) time. Mr. Kaiser is one of the most passionate and caring teachers I have ever learned from. He has been my newspaper teacher for three years but he also teaches AP Gov/Econ and World History. Constantly, he helps students who are majoring in journalism for college to beef up their resume and makes sure they get the stories they need to submit into their portfolio. He revamped the journalism program at our school and is working with school administration to create a path with newspaper, tv broadcast, and yearbook. Our newspaper has won three awards thanks to his hard work and the fact that his passion for newspaper always reflects off the students. He has taught my classmates and I so much about journalism and working in real-life scenarios. Mr. Kaiser is also one of the first teachers to take full advantage of the chrome books given to our district. He utilizes them to their fullest extent in his history and gov/ econ classes, through google classroom and google docs. This has been very beneficial because in other classes we barely use our technology, and I know that in the real world our jobs will be technology based. Mr. Kaiser is an amazing teacher who deserves to be recognized for his efforts as an educator.

Mrs. Dawes is a fantastic teacher! She has a natural love of teaching that shows in her daily interaction with her students. Kindergarten is particularly challenging because the students come from such a diverse preschool background. From those who attended for more than 2 years and have mastered their letters and are beginning readers and beyond, to those who had limited preschool and are still learning their letters, to all levels in between. She shows the utmost compassion and patience for students at all levels and provides them the gentle yet firm direction they need to be successful. She has the ability to assess personality type and pinpoint areas where a child needs additional direction. She has given our daughter the guidance she needs to be successful in the classroom and has laid the foundation for her to continue on in grade school. Although our daughter was a very young 5 entering her Kindergarten class, Mrs. Dawes has provided the structure she needed to learn classroom etiquette, develop emotionally. and be successful academically at the same time. Mrs. Nuzman is, literally, the best teacher I have ever had. She does more than what her job requires. She doesn’t just teach state standards; she teaches life lessons. Every day, I looked forward to coming to her class. If the teacher’s this excited about the subject, why shouldn’t I be too? And, that’s exactly the thing. She’s passionate in what she does. She teaches English, and she teaches it well. She instilled it into every part of my life. The moment I will most remember is when we studied Robert Herrick’s poem, “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time.” She really hammered his message into us. Carpe diem. Seize the day! That day, I remember leaving class like, “Wow, this class is too deep for me. It makes you think about life.” That’s not a bad thing, though. Her class isn’t like others. I don’t just walk in, sit down, and learn stuff. I’m made to use my brain, and I’m made to make changes to my life. I have to thank her for everything that she has done for me and my classmates, and I think this is the way to do it. She makes me feel like I actually matter. I know that definitely, there are other teachers out there who care about their students. But, she’s the first who absolutely made me feel cared about. I always felt so smart, or strong, or confident. It felt like I was capable of anything! So, honestly, she changed my life for the better. I don’t ever want her to stop what she’s doing. She once told us, “My job is important because I teach you guys. You guys are the future.” I want her to know that she does affect the future. At least, she affected mine.

Mrs. Nuzman is one of the most dedicated, considerate, talented, and energetic teachers I’ve ever had. She honestly wants success for each and every one of her students. She forms interesting and exciting lessons around the material: a boasting competition modeled after _Beowulf_, a secret-sibling-type project to learn about chivalry and _The Canterbury Tales_, a study of Jack the Rippers letters for examples of diction. While in her class, I never once felt bored or disinterested – I looked forward to Brit. Lit. as my absolute favorite class. British Literature with Mrs. Nuzman was one of the most interesting and intellectually stimulating classes I have ever taken. The insight and passion she brought to every piece of literature and every concept was astounding. A special consideration I have only ever witnessed from Mrs. Nuzman: she takes the time to check in personally with each individual student, to address class-, school-, or personally-related concerns. She also asks for honest feedback, and seriously thinks about it, instead of pretending to.

Mrs. Lim is very organized and prepared well . She loves , educates and motivates kids very well. She thinks about what her students need and tries to develop activities that will help thw students build the necessary skills. An example of thus is the debates she has had her class prepare. This teaches both oral skills such as confident delivery and listening as well as how to persuade with evidence to support your claims. Her love and creativiry makes her the oerfect candidate for this award.

Mrs. Lim is deserving of this honorable award because she exceeds all the requirements of a great teacher, from educating to connecting with students. Every parent wants their kid to be in Mrs. Lim’s class because they know that their child will receive the optimal education and strong mentorship. It may be taboo for men to enter these things, but I am compelled to nominate Mrs. Lim because of what I saw my daughter and her classmates accomplish this year. Pictures are worth a thousand words, see for yourself. Here is a URL link to the website that her 4th grade class is currently developing – www.simpfect.com/playground. Also, Google “EMOCA Fisler” and see the YouTube video of the mobile app concept the class put together earlier this year. Thank you for your consideration.

Mrs. Nuzman is not only the sweetest, most caring and thoughtful teacher I’ve ever had, but also my inspiration. She taught me a great deal about loving literature and words with constant and contagious enthusiasm and creative lesson plans. Alongside the fun and engaging curriculum, Nuz added in a few life lessons as well. She also never hesitated to ask her students for feedback and of course we honestly gave her our opinion. It truly shows that she strives to become a better teacher everyday, although she was more than I could ever want from an English teacher. Mrs. Nuzman is more than a teacher; she’s our caring friend who always keeps her door open for her students.

Mrs. Nuzman is simply a stellar teacher in terms of style and content. She blends strict discipline with fierce devotion for her students and their mental and academic well-being. Emphasizing good writing as a habit, she transforms people’s writing into beautiful prose through concepts we all wish were covered in elementary school. She’s dedicated, funny, but most of all inspiring, constantly challenging her students to change their world paradigm and see the true value in every word, and above all in themselves. Tears have been shed in that classroom from pure emotion and gratitude to her, and to her duty as the spine of our Honors British Literature family.

“Be patient with the process. If you can’t handle this, turn the handle on that door and leave Honors British Literature.” This should initiate shivers down one’s spine; however, I knew that deep down, she would be an inspiration. Students can clearly see her passion in instilling a solid foundation in not only English, but other valuable life lessons. She understands that a classroom is not just a place to learn, but it is a safe haven and a place of varying passions. She spends many hours outside of school to prepare her lesson plans to make it memorable and entertaining. I never had a teacher sprinkle rose petals along the entrance to her room to present a poem. With “To the Virgins, to Make Most of Time” by Robert Herrick, she emphasized that we must seize the day and understand that each opportunity is a rose petal that will soon disappear from our hands. She focuses on the student’s needs and trying to incorporate life lessons into each lesson. There is never a day that goes by without meaningful and high depth of knowledge discussion. Everyone is so eager to get started with the new lesson and All hands are up and ready to participate. Analyzing a modern music video to a 17th century poem, she utilizes a variety of resources to teach her lessons. She opens her arms to every student who needs help or just needs an adult to confide with. She is the first to emphasize an important message, which we have all failed to acknowledged throughout our high school career: “Your grades do not define who you are. You matter to me. You are my future and my children’s future. If you could see yourself the way I do, you would never have an ounce of self-esteem issues or fear of being judged. You are the reason why I sleep at night and wake up bright and early. I love seeing your faces and I am so thankful for your contributions to my life. I signed up to teach and share my passion, but I come home from work reflecting on how much more I learn from all of you. Remember that I love you and I am always here for each and every one of you.” Mrs. Nuzman is beginning an eye-opening legacy. She changed our lives forever.

Mrs. Nuzman not only helps us, the students, develop our personal voices through diction, syntax and sentence structure, but also helps us develop the stories we will right with our new found voice. Her classes are a mix of academics and application; all of the interesting books we read during the semester (Beowulf, MacBeth, The Canterbury Tales, Frankenstein, and The Portait of Dorian Gray) broadens not only our understanding of British Literature, but also our understanding of the world we live in. She truly cares about her students, because to her, we are her future and the future.

The extraordinary Mrs. Streeter cares about her students learning math and liking it. She makes sure that each and every student learns how to calculate problems and teaches kids why they need to know how to work with numbers. She relates well to all kinds of kids and accepts each child for who they are and truly believes all of her students will learn how to work successfully with numbers. Her gift is giving each of her students the power to believe in themselves, which gives them necessary confidence to persevere and gain the competence they need to succeed. She never lets her students give up. She makes herself available to her students during her waking hours, 7 days a week. Mindy has a knack for reaching all students whether gifted, struggling, or somewhere in between. She has the amazing ability to connect with her “friends” and move them to their highest potential. With a master’s degree in reading education, she succeeds in getting all of her kindergarteners, regardless of abilities, to read whether leveled readers or Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. (Yes, she has had kindergarten students at this level!) And she doesn’t stop there—her reading instruction moves seamlessly into writing. I have witnessed first-hand the amazing writings of her 5 and 6-year-old novices. Best of all . . . her students adore her and believe her when she tells them that there is nothing they cannot do. Kim Randall taught our daughter in third grade and moved on to be her math teacher for 7th and 8th grade. Not only did she prepare our daughter so that she tested into honors classes in high school, but she created a love for learning that I believe began in third grade. Katie loved attending Mrs. Randall’s class everyday and would come home at night and do her homework without a problem. Katie would often say “Mrs. Randall makes math so much fun. It is easy to understand when she explains it to me.” That is not often heard from kids…especially when it comes to math. I personally know other students that would say the same about this teacher. She has even gone out of her way to help her former students with math problems when the were in high school. Mrs. Randall will always hold a special place in our heart. And in the hearts of many other kids.

Every single day Jene Streeter teaches our 6th graders about the many amazing things in this world that are related to math. She does not approach it as merely a “subject” that needs to be taught and needs to be learned. She ties daily things that the kids enjoy, that the kids do/use or can relate to back to math in order to assure them it is not as frightening as they think. This is something that should excite them and that they know will be useful. Ms. Streeter has taken it upon herself to retrain students’ brains so as not be afraid but to question. My daughter has dreaded mathematics all along and was very intimidated about entering 6th grade because “math was going to be so hard!” Ms. Streeter deconstructs math so that the students understand each and every layer. When I mentioned my daughter’s fear of math, Ms. Streeter confidently stated “We will certainly change that” and she has. My daughter now has a healthy respect for math but is not avoiding it because she despises it and is afraid of it. Most students get tutored by her and have excelled beyond imagination. Even MCS staff have her tutor their children. She is strong, confident, witty and the students adore her. We are very thankful for her!

Janelle Crain gets an A+ times 10 as an educator. We recognize how competitive the field is in Orange County, but Janelle truly stands out. She focuses on the holistic development of each child, including their academic performance, analytic capabilities, leadership, team-building, and broader social/interpersonal skills. She embraces new ideas and philosophies to incorporate into her teaching, challenging herself at all times to do best by the kids. That means she may change her curriculum, she may push herself outside her comfort zone because her goal is to create great adults. My daughter, who tends to be pretty self-contained, comes home quoting her learnings from Mrs. Crain and is excited about her projects and her work. She takes great pride in learning, and she and her classmates rank consistently high in test scores as well. But, I believe it’s the other lessons that make Mrs. Crain so valued by parents, administration and students. She is a fun person but sets boundaries for the students – teaching them tough but valuable lessons on accountability, respect, and prioritization. Plus, I love her focus on the social values and the bigger world in which our children live. But most selfishly, I love that this wonderful teacher that my daughter has been so lucky to have for the last 2 years has been so influential in helping my daughter grow as a person – stepping up her interpersonal skills, having a voice, and encouraging her to take on stronger leadership roles and more initiative. My daughter aspires to be like Janelle, and that wouldn’t be a bad thing at all!

Sra. González (Spanish and World History teacher) is one of the most unique and talented teachers I have ever had. Her charisma and personality make it impossible not to love her (ask any of her students), and it is because of this that students find it easy to trust her. Her always-open-door policy in which she makes herself available to counsel students in all aspects of their lives demonstrates that her priority is to help the students achieve the highest levels of success, not just in the classroom. She respects the students, and so the students respect and trust her. I’ve had her twice as a teacher, in 5th grade and Freshman year as my Two-Way Immersion World History teacher, and she demonstrated the same passion then as she does now. She loves her job (and is very knowledgeable in her field), she loves her students, and school is never uninteresting in her class. Even though I don’t have her this year, she constantly motivates me to keep up my grades and keep challenging myself. Many times this year, Sra.González had more belief in me than I did, and it was her pressuring me to higher my standards that allowed me to succeed. Honestly, there are so many great things about Sra.González that the word limit prohibits me from elaborating on. To sum it up: she is a great teacher, and an even better person!

For the past 21 years, Christy Bennett has taught, inspired and truly prepared students to succeed in life. She builds their confidence in Math, and helps them to soar. Her success can be seen not just in her classroom but beyond to college. She teaches her students how to problem solve, work together and that anything is possible. She taught my daughter Algebra in seventh grade. She noticed the class was learning the content quickly and completed the curriculum before the end of the school year. Christy took the initiative to get Geometry books from the High School to help challenge her students. Christy had a huge impact on my daughter and on other students she taught that year. Her impact can be seen in the colleges that the students in that class currently attend- Berkley, Wellesley, UCLA, Occidental, and Yale. Many students struggle with algebra she has the ability to bring algebra to life. Mrs. Bennett is a role model for not only her students but also for other educators. Her influence expands beyond her classroom to other teachers throughout the district. For two years, she served as a District Certificated Learning and Assessment Specialist where mentored teachers throughout the district providing teacher training and in class support. Christy Bennett is a teacher on the forefront of technology innovation. Through her Bring Your Own Device( BYOD) program, students use their own personal devices to individualize learning. She uses an online learning management system so students can access curriculum anywhere and customize their learning needs. A former student said, “ Mrs. Bennett was always aware of every students’ needs in her classroom. She really embodied the statement, “ Every Students CAN and WILL LEARN! She encouraged questions, inspired us, and fostered in us a love of mathematics and learning.” As a parent I saw the difference in my child, my daughter was excited about learning and well prepared for high school and college. On a state admissions test, she scored in the 98%ile in mathematics. When we asked my daughter what she felt made a difference for her on this test, she said because, “Mrs. Bennett challenged us to learn all we could. “ As a parent I will forever be grateful to Mrs. Bennett for how she changed my daughter’s life and for this I truly believe Christy Bennett deserves to be named Top Teacher 2016.

Mrs. Dawes delivers the perfect combination of structure, compassion and self confidence building in the classroom. My kindergartner is shy. She is smart and grasps on to her lessons and homework brilliantly, however she is not self confident in groups of children and speaks with her head down and in such a low voice that she cannot be heard. Mrs. Dawes takes the time to address this with us and Bella, and is helping her to be confident in herself and to speak up with authority, a lesson that will follow her all throughout life. We can see in difference in the way she speaks and interacts with other children.

I would like to nominate Diane Cavenee. My son is in her class and I love seeing him tell me about all the things he learned. From histor to science and all the subjects in between. She has made such an impact on my son especially with his self confidence. She helps him in a way he understands with such patience which I am very grateful for. Because she values great education for our kids she does her best to help the kids understand every lesson she teaches. And she makes sure every single one of them understands. I wish we had more teachers like her!!!

1. Always putting the children first and making sure she nurtures and educates both academically and socially. · Whenever an issue between kids arises, she seemingly calms the situation, makes the children think about what they are doing, what they could have done differently, and moves on. · She also shows the patience to empower the kids to resolve issues amongst themselves before always escalating to the teacher with petty issues. 2. She is always so patient with parents and their insatiable appetite to know about their kids progress. · We always see her taking the time to talk with parents and update them · We know this first hand because we talk to her almost every day! · Never do we feel rushed or one that is taking her time 3. Shows patience with the more “rambunctious” ones · Our kid is one of those that cannot sit still all the time and has gotten into trouble with previous teachers. · Mrs Cavenee does not let kids get away with much but reprimands them in a way it is not demotivating. She is very tactful in her approach and it is effective · Kids are not sent home with color charts and behavior contracts as if they are in detention. Again, this is not to say she doesn’t have control of her classroom. Quite the contrary, if you visit her classroom, all of the kids are behaved and ready to learn. Even the more “energetic kids”. 4. She challenges the kids academically and pushes them to do more · My son is coming home with increasingly more challenging work that is not boring to him. I know you may think this is a function of him progressing to older grades but we feel Mrs Cavenee pushes the kids to always see what more they can do… even within the context of a standard classroom worksheet. 5. She makes it a point to not miss class · All of the past teachers My son has had seemed to miss at least a few days every month for various reasons. · Mrs Cavenee has not been absent and this is good for kids. Kids excel in routines and consistency. This list can go on and on but I don’t want to lose the purpose of this letter. We really just want to express our gratitude to her and we feel like this is the best way to make sure she is thanked. She is truly an asset to the BPSD and we hope that we encounter many more teachers like her. If we are fortunate to realize this, it is almost certain that our child will be ready for the real world when he exits academia.
Cheryl Richardson

Tia Reed, Former Student, Future Parent
As a 27 years old woman I have been through grade school, middle school, high school and college. Throughout all of my years of schooling, Mrs. Cheryl Richardson, my Pre-K teacher, always was and always will be my absolute favorite teacher. I have my fondest school memories because of her. She never stopped me from being myself and always encouraged my creative growth. As an adult, I go back to my old school to visit her often and it always brings back wonderful memories. I have walked into her classroom many times while school was in session and never once have I ever seen a child not fully engaged and clearly excited about being in her class. I now have a two year old daughter and she will be having Mrs. Richardson as her Pre-K teacher just as I did. I could not be more happy to know that my daughter will be in an environment where her mind will be challenged, her creativity will be nurtured and her spirit will be loved, all because that is the kind of phenomenal teacher and human being Cheryl is. If everything Mrs. Richardson embodies isn’t what a Top Teacher is made of, then I don’t know what is!

This teacher has encouraged my daughter when she lacked confidence in her abilities. She also challenges her students to write and create in new ways, ways that not only entertain but that also engage and potentially could change the world. Like every nominated teacher, she cares, gives them her time and attention and goes above and beyond in and outside the classroom. More than that, she makes a difference in their lives, at the school. For example, a playwright herself, she runs a new play festival, which has grown every year that involves not only the creative writing students but also students from the acting, production and design, and other arts. Every teacher at this school is amazing… Mrs. Palmquist is that something special on top of amazing… The cherry on top of the amazing dessert that is OCSA.

Autumn Browne Autumn has turned a drama program which is, sadly, an afterthought at too many schools into a powerhouse showcase program. Her energy, creativity, and dedication results in eight productions a year, plus assemblies, lunchtime performances, and community presentations. She writes numerous grants, and enlists professional actors and playwrights to teach master classes in stage combat, movement, journalism, and screenwriting — bringing real life experience into the classroom. Teachers who routinely require students to orally explain their thinking in class know that many are fearful of speaking aloud. Autumn’s drama classes directly address student trepidation regarding public speaking. Through theatre, students learn critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-motivation — skills they will use the rest of their lives. There are many opportunities for students to see TV tapings, and theatrical productions. Autumn drives students to various productions (picking students up and taking them home). She designed a three-day Hollywood weekend, and for the past 12 years has taken 25-30 students for a behind-the-scenes look at movie making and theatre. On these weekends students shoot a movie or music video. Without her efforts most would never have access to these horizon-broadening experiences. Autumn partnered with the Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills and was integral in pioneering their educational outreach program, “Speak Up – Take a Chance”. As Event Coordinator for the Anaheim Performing Arts Center Foundation, she produces four fundraisers per year, bringing in Brookhurst students to help, as well as perform. Autumn is also involved in Arts advocacy. In 2005 she began working with The California Arts Project, instructing elementary school teachers on strategies to include drama in their curriculum. She flew to Sacramento to report on the new National Theatre Standards to the California Department of Education. She speaks annually before the AUHSD Board of Trustees on the importance of including the Arts for a well-rounded education. She believes strongly in continuing to hone the craft of acting in order to increase her effectiveness in the classroom. Autumn’s life revolves around her passion for teaching drama, directing community theatre, and appearing on stages throughout Southern California. She was honored as AUHSD Teacher of the Year 2015. Autumn Browne is a fine actor and a wonderfully talented teacher, who shares her passion and love with her students.

Both of my children have had the good fortune of having Katie Klingbeil for a teacher for 10th grade advanced English. Ms. Klingbeil is fantastic because she engages the children at a high level of learning, ever challenging them to do better. Her classes are lively with presentations, group projects and constant interaction. It’s the class kids hate to miss because you truly feel you’ve missed out on something. She is a tough grader, but her genuine interest in them and what interests them inspires kids to try harder rather than discouraging them to give up. She is in touch with her students and their stress levels and flexible when she can be on deadlines to help try and minimize it. She is supported by what is, from a parent’s perspective, is a premier English Department with excellent teachers, programs and school spirit. She is a role model for the right balance between academic excellence and developing children to not only think, but care.

Mr. Shultz is an amazing music teacher! He is so wonderful with the students, that even if the kids don’t really want to continue playing an instrument, they STILL SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS AGAIN! That’s right, they keep playing an instrument cuz they don’t want to give up his class. He is tough on them, but very fun-loving. He calls them nick-names like “scoobs” and cares about each and every student in there. He ends up with big classes, but manages them seamlessly. Truly, he is the best teacher my 2 sons have ever had and they don’t even attend middle school any more!

There is a reason why students who are stressed out with homework, tests, college applications, work, and relationship issues still find it worth getting up at the ugly hour of 6:54AM every day to take the Model United Nations elective. That reason is Mr. John Baker, Jr. I don’t know how he is able to get such lively engagement from teens whose brains are telling them they should be sleeping, but he does. The way he teaches this class makes me wonder why it is not a mandatory class for all students in the hope that we can teach people to be good citizens of the world, care about what is going on around you and how it effects others. The basic skills of listening to others and how to disagree civilly and respectfully are lessons that the daily news reports show need to be taught not only to our children, but to our leaders. Mr. Baker exhibits the skill where he will forgo a planned lesson for a teachable moment that comes up when an especially interesting current event happens or even an event on campus poses an opportunity for debate and discussion. He also made an incredible Captain Hook at this year’s Homecoming events!

Mrs. Morgan is a caring teacher who has been very pro active in noting what my child and others in her class need and finding them help and solutions. I have been very impressed on multiple occassions at how she quickly noted a weak area for my child, helped her personally with understanding the material and contacted me so that I as a parent could work in helping her efforts. The results have been wonderful. My child feels supported by her teacher, confident in her knowledge as she begins to excel, and is excited to take on new material. I applaude Mrs. Morgan for going the extra mile to personally write a note to my child of encouragement for a job well done and for Her acknowledgment of her higher test scores as proof of her efforts.
Deborah Faulds

Michelle Datwyler, Parent
I nominate Mrs. Deborah Faulds, second grade teacher at Bathgate Elementary School in Mission Viejo. Mrs. Faulds taught my oldest son and is currently teaching my youngest son, who has special needs. Our school has many wonderful teachers, but Mrs. Faulds special traits makes her stand out. She is authentic. Mrs. Faulds who children are the same age as mine truly understands the education, personal, and social needs of her students. She outreaches to parents timely when her student succeeds or needs additional assistance. Mrs. Faulds takes time from her day to find resources that will advance her students because she cares. She is an active partner with our family to ensure that our youngest son thrives in his academic setting by researching and implementing resources that would help him in his classroom and at recess. She also continues to ask how my older son is doing and shares ideas on we can further develop him intellectually. Mrs. Faulds is compassionate to all her students. For my youngest son, she speaks to her other students about how my son reacts to loud noises and to take a moment to understand what it is like to be in his shoes. On the other hand, she works with my son and teaches him how to communicate with his peers to obtain positive interactions. As a volunteer for the literacy center I see some students reading levels may not match their peers. Mrs. Faulds created and built a support system in which all the students in the reading group read along with the one student who is struggling while not creating a feeling of inadequacy. Mrs. Faulds looks for opportunities to create experiences for students while operating within a lean budget. Her creativity includes hosting student poetry recitals, encouraging students to use technology in the school library and at home to enhance their literacy skills and presentation skills, and encouraging them to participate in free activities sponsored by the community so that they can build their life experiences. Mrs. Faulds’ students are very lucky to receive their education from her. Her commitment to educating students to meet and exceed California’s education requirements is evident in her weekly communication. However, more importantly, she truly wants all of her students to be confident, happy, and healthy children that will make them successful in pursuing their dreams.

Mrs. Bryant is the best English teacher ever! while MCS is a very academically rigorous school, Mrs. Bryant also makes learning fun! With a Christian based heart, alongside her loving, caring self she encourages me to do well in school and in other activities. She also wrote a book! Ms. Green is an awesome History teacher. History was always the “boring” subject back in Elementary. Not anymore! Ms. Green is a great role model for us kids, and she is super funny! we all laugh in her class, but we get all of our work done. Having fun and getting A’s, is kinda our thing. Ms. Green may be new, but she is definitely fitting in with the other teachers.

Wendy Hudson
Tustin Memorial Academy Santa Ana
Mary Pham, Parejnt
Ms. Hudson has been our principal at Tustin Memorial Academy for the past 6 years. Tustin Memorial Academy serves as the only public elementary magnet school in the Tustin Unified District. During her tenure at Tustin Memorial Academy our school has thrived under her leadership, where she has truly touched the lives of each and every student on daily basis. Her memory is amazing, where she literally knows the name of the over 600 students in our school. She understands their individualized needs and collaborates with teachers, parents and students so that they can truly succeed. She is outside helping to unload kids from cars and is always involved with teachers and student activities and lends a helping hand in every area of the school. Under Ms. Hudson’s leadership, she has led our school to becoming the #1 school (highest test scores) in the district and the Top 15 in the County. We were just recently notified by the District 2 weeks ago, that she would be transferred to another school. We had hoped that Ms. Hudson would stay to finish out her tenure at TUSD for her upcoming retirement in 2 years. She has touched the lives of our children in our community with her genuine concern for the needs of our kids. She incorporated the wonderful “Be the Star you are” program to emphasize that not only does academics matter- but character and respect. I can say that my son, works so hard to win this award and the long term affects of the “Character Counts” program at TMA makes a life-long difference in their everyday lives. The technology, art and garden program that Ms. Hudson has helped to create and support truly gives our children learning “outside” of the classroom. The hands on learning and teaching that Ms. Hudson has implemented truly makes her an extraordinary principal! We wanted to honor Ms.Hudson with this award from Parent OC to show our appreciation of all that she has brought to our school. Her commitment and strong leadership and her ability to touch our student’s lives will be deeply missed.Furthermore, the district has also stated she may not be able to finish out the school year which is more devastating for our parents and students. We would like to honor her with a celebration of the success and appreciation she has given to TMA. At TMA, we are so proud to nominate Ms. Hudson for this prestigious award because she is truly a role model to us all.

Evan Forster
Culverdale Elementary School Irvine
Kellie Pendergest, friend
A little individual attention can go a long way. Culverdale Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Evan Forster faces the challenges of a diverse classroom of 33 students, many of whom are English learners. His secret to success has been creating a learning experience that keeps students constantly engaged and appropriately challenged. Mr. Forster encourages his students’ intellectual curiosity, helps them overcome obstacles to learning and makes them feel more comfortable at school. His classroom environment is designed to inspire confidence in all of his students. Desks have all been replaced with round tables to promote communication and collaboration between students. Lessons are carefully prepared to meet students at their level so that they can experience success and be inspired to work hard to improve. With a focus on responsibility and respect for one another, students hold each other accountable for their actions and celebrate their successes together. When the school year began, he divided students into four small groups, each reading at their own pace. The small-group learning format, facilitated by the presence of instructional aid Mrs. Mary Beth Garrison, allows Mr. Forster to apply a Response to Instruction (RTI) model, or a way of identifying and supporting students with learning and behavioral needs early on, with great success. As evidence, one student improved from a 2.7 grade level at the beginning of the year, to a 5.1 grade level – a 54 percentile jump in reading levels in three months! Mr. Forster’s dedication to helping students find their confidence extends beyond the school year. He has taught the Public Speaking and Debate course for 4th-6th grade students during Irvine Public Schools Foundation’s Summer Enrichment Academy for the past two years. This program offers students the opportunity to pursue interests during the summer months to build skills that extend into the school year and beyond. With an incredible dedication to helping students to find their passion, their confidence, and their voice, Mr. Forster’s impact on his students is an inspiration!
Bill Brooks
Eastshore Elementary Irvine
Kellie Pendergest, Community partner
With over 38 years of teaching excellence and advocacy, Bill Brooks has earned a reputation as an environmental education leader in the Irvine Unified School District. In addition to his many sixth grade classroom lessons at Eastshore Elementary that educate and enlighten young minds about the environment, Bill engages in many “above and beyond” activities including an Oceans class that he conducts through the Irvine Public Schools Foundation every summer. Through this IPSF summer program, students experience hands-on learning that extends beyond the classroom. Students study marine biology, ocean recreation, beach safety, and physical oceanography in a classroom setting and bring their learning to life with experiences paddle boarding in the ocean, taking a marine wildlife cruise, snorkeling in a kelp forest, and stand-up paddle boarding in Newport’s Back Bay. Brook’s believes that Children Learn What They Live (Dorthy Law Nolte quote), so to enhance his ocean awareness curriculum, each year, Brooks takes 100 students from Eastshore to Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) for a week of Outdoor Science School. Mr. Brooks also established a Green Team at Eastshore Elementary over 6 years ago, which has created a lunch waste reduction and recycling program, and implemented a compost system for the school. As an environmental advocate, Brooks took 12 elementary students to Sacramento to lobby to ban shark fin soup in California. Their efforts helped place a ban on a dangerous practice, helping those students and many others see the critical role of government and public policy in environmental protection. We want to thank Mr. Brooks for living his commitment and passion for educating and empowering students about the environment every day!
