Things are heating up. Summer is here and it’s that time of year for family fun and travel — which just happens to be this month’s issue theme.
There’s lots of pent-up energy in the air, and many of us just want to have a good old-fashioned, happy-go-lucky summer.
We have plenty of content to help guide families through this new fresh summer full of possibilities. Theme parks have been back for some time now and they are moving full force ahead. Our cover feature spotlights Sesame Place, a new amusement and waterpark in San Diego. It’s a unique experience sure to keep families entertained — and cool — all day long. Our theme parks feature covers some of the other local amusement parks, including Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland Resort and more. There’s plenty of new attractions as well as many returning favorites you won’t want to miss at the local theme parks.
Travel is also a big part of this issue because, well, people want to get out. But with gas prices what they are, we don’t need to travel far to have a great time with the family. First we start with a staycation guide that’ll keep you plenty entertained all summer long without ever having to step foot outside the county. Then we take you through a couple of local getaways in Mission Bay, San Diego and San Francisco to give families plenty of options. Of course, no July issue is complete without our Fourth of July guide to take you through the best and brightest events — both with and without fireworks.
Meanwhile, our Mindfulness writer details some mindfulness exercises for traveling with kids to help families have a soothing summer vacation, instead of a stressful one.
On more serious topics, Family Wellness focuses on helping create self-worth in children while living in a very complicated world. And Ask the Expert answers the very timely and important question of how parents can help guide their kids through the trauma of school shootings.
On the inspirational side, Local Hero shares the story of a local teen honored for her extreme dedication to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
It’s time for a fun summer vacation with the family. Have fun, be safe and have a great summer!
