Parenting OC Magazine is teaming up with local businesses for a Mother’s Day Makeover Contest for two lucky moms to win a fabulous makeover package and a mini-portrait session to show off the final results.
Each submission includes an essay about why a mother: parent, significant other, or friend is deserving of a makeover. Check out this year’s winners below plus our announcement on social media…
Deserving Mom Essay Winner Martha Vuong of Anaheim, CA
“My mother has spent her whole life sacrificing for me and my two siblings. Back in her homeland, my mom used to work for Vietnam Airlines. After the Vietnam war, all changed and we had to escape by boat and leave our country for the United States. Since then, she has held many different jobs to support her family including an Instructional Assistant/Noon Time Supervisor when we were in grade schools and in the afternoon, she would take the bus to work in a medical office. Later she would go on to work as a Public Relations manager for a hospital in Huntington Beach. When that hospital closed down, she went back to school in her 40s to become a Licensed Cosmetologist. For over 20+ years, she worked to make people beautiful, giving facials, manicures, pedicures, haircuts, waxing, and more. When my father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, my mom sold her business to take care of him. After all these years my mom truly deserves to be on the receiving end of what she used to do for others.”
– Nomination Essay by Cecilia Luna (Martha’s daughter)
Deserving Mom Essay Winner Flora Hansen of San Clemente, CA
“When my sister and I were in grade school, Grandma used to pick us up from school every Wednesday. As part of our weekly routine, she’d take us 99 Cent Store shopping then back to her house for some of the best pot roast dinners I’ve ever had. When we’d be in her car at any given offramp (where many homeless people convened with signs asking for money) she’d slide her arm behind the passenger seat, plucking one of 15+ carefully selected & packaged grocery bags. Each one was filled with identical snacks, bottled water, a roll of crisp quarters, and a new toothbrush. At each red light, I watched Grandma roll the window down with her sweetest and comforting ‘It’s ok dear!’ smile to greet those in need. ‘Don’t make anyone feel less than or anything except GOOD about themselves,’ she’d reminded us grandkids. Absolutely the most adorable lady and the most angelic person you will ever meet! Grandma Flora would give anyone the shoes off of her feet, the jacket off her back, and the last dime in her coin purse. That’s just who she is.”
– Nominated by Debbie Hansen-Bosse (Flora’s daughter)
Nomination Essay by Jayne Bosse (Flora’s granddaughter)
