As we enter into the fun of summer — with sand, sun and pool time — we also hit the end of the school year. This beginning and end is a reminder of how quickly the years pass.
One moment you’re learning how to ride a tricycle with the assistance of your proud father, the next moment he’s teaching you how to drive his car.
But even as the cycles of traditions continue, some have changed — including the roles of mom and dad. Stay-at-home dads aren’t as unusual as they once were, and it’s easy to find dads who not only work but are actively involved in raising their kids, alongside mom.
It’s some of these dads that we feature in this issue — busy, working dads from various walks of life who have made parenting a priority.
We also profile a father and son who have found a like-minded passion in giving back in the form of work with a local non-profit offering support to critically ill children and their families. Now a teenager, Conor Quill began his involvement with Miracles for Kids as a first-grader when his father became a board member. You can read about their inspirational story in Local Hero.
Also in honor of dad, Foodie Jr. this month highlights some of our favorite chicken wings – and we even have a recipe for those who want to surprise dad with some delicious, home-cooked wings.
As we celebrate dad, we also say hello to summer. The Pause Button offers up some fresh ideas for creating a memorable summer with your kids by embarking on a fun project. Meanwhile, Family Wellness spotlights Hoag’s Project Wipeout, a program developed to help educate the public on how to keep safe at the beach and in the water. Don’t miss some important tips by a program expert for helping keep your family safe during the beach and pool season. Along the same lines, Pets in the Family delves into how to keep your dog safe when taking him (or her) out for a day at the dog beach or pool.
Even as we say goodbye to the school year, we’re always thinking about quality education. Our other feature this month focuses on all the innovative and fun ways local private schools are integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) into their classrooms.
As you hit the beach and your favorite getaway this month, don’t forget to honor all the dads in your life. And also, don’t forget the sunscreen.
