As we kick off a new year, it is always a time of reflection and an opportunity to strive to make and meet resolutions on how to make This Year our best. Sure, some of these resolutions are frequent flyers (that often crash and burn), but that doesn’t mean we need to give up on the effort to take new steps in the right direction. Maybe that needs to start with baby steps.
Baby steps — we should all take a lesson from our toddlers. No matter how many times we teeter and totter and frankly, full on faceplant in our efforts to improve and meet our goals, it doesn’t need to be the end of trying. We should wipe “failing” out of our vocabulary, it simply represents too much finality.
Each wobbly step in the right direction just makes us stronger and closer to reaching our end goal. Those tentative, little movements build on the efforts from the day before, soon getting easier and more comfortable and more familiar as our strength builds. Soon, we are stuck in good habits instead of bad.
But in the beginning? Baby steps. Getting better sleep, eating at home as a family, updating our tech, getting our teens to read, getting more exercise. We tackled some of the most popular and most difficult resolutions to stick to in this issue, by finding hacks and helpers to give you something to lean on. (Think of them as a coffee table to cruise around.)
We also jump into the world of education, with baby steps. It can be intimidating, learning how to pick the right preschool and private school. There is no “perfect school” — every family will make their own checklist to find what will set their child on the path to success. We have you covered, with tips on what to look for as you find your perfect fit. Orange County has a wealth of amazing private education opportunities, we compile them into an easy to peruse Private School Directory which features the nitty gritty to help focus your search.
Whether public or private, once you discover the best school for your child, it is time to make sure they are ready. Take a deep breath, there is no need for tutors in tying shoes or online study courses for toddlers to nail their ABC’s. You can actually follow a page from the pros and prep your child for preschool through play. These natural opportunities to learn are not only proven the best way to form a foundation for educational success, they are a no stress and fun way to make sure your little one is right where they need to be.
On a personal note, the theme of “New Beginnings” is particularly appropriate this January as I bid a fond farewell to the readers of Parenting OC Magazine. After three and a half years of getting to know so many wonderful organizations and individuals throughout Orange County, and 42 of these Letters from the Editor, it is bittersweet to say goodbye, but I am excited about new things to come. Thank you for welcoming me into this amazing place and letting me be part of your lives as parents.
