Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Plot: The saga continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. The hammer-wielding heavy fights to restore order across the cosmos via a face-off between the titular God of Thunder and Dark Elves led by the wrathful Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston). To defeat an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor is forced into an alliance with the treacherous Loki. But the Elves will not be the only enemy faction Asgard will face in the sequel. There is another group of evildoers known as “The Marauders,” a mix of viking-like humans as well as isolated members of other beastly races — some possibly from Hel (the Norse Underworld) and Vanaheim.
Parenting Points: The Norse universe is based on a classic mythology that could be instructive about archetypes and values. But this is for tweens and up, a very complicated blend of genres: high science fiction, gritty fantasy and realism. Thor is, by far our most wild, fringe thriller in the Marvel Universe.
