What is Mexico’s top-rated family resort doing in a feature on romantic getaways for mom and dad? Because the reality for romance-starved parents is that they can’t always leave the children behind. All-inclusive Club Med family resorts are about making everyone happy with the to-each-his-own approach, meaning you get the romance while the kids get their Mini Club Med summer camp experience. At the idyllic Club Med Ixtapa Pacific property, which is set on a sandy cove at the base of the Sierra Madres, 160 miles northwest of Acapulco, and a five-minute drive from the city of Zihuatanejo, there is a piece of paradise for everybody.
There are programs, G.O.’s (Gentle Officers) and facilities for every age, from babies to teens. You’ll find yourself saying, “Okay, kids, play over there with your new friends from Iowa, and mom and dad will see you a little later,” and you will not feel a tinge of guilt because the setup for the children — the elaborately designed Mini Club Med play area — with the thatched-roof, enthusiastic attendants and endless activities is like Fantasy Island for those the size of Tattoo. In short (pun intended), parents typically experience some difficulty getting their kids out of the fun and back to the room upon return.
What to do with that childless time? Well you can head straight back to the room, of course (and the rooms are very nice), but the reason you are in Ixtapa, and not in Cabo San Lucas or Cancun is because there is no place in Mexico more beautiful or romantic than being on this private Club Med beach in Ixtapa in February. The average temperature is 76.8 degrees and sunny, and the migrating whales can still be spotted.
From your beach recliner, you will see a small island, called Ixtapa Island, maybe a mile out, that looks only slightly larger than the one named after Gilligan, and if you are like me, you have to go there. Do that. Get in a little soft adventure with your valentine and reveal a slightly wild side with a spontaneous exclamation like, “Babydoll, let’s go check out that island.” It’s a very cool place, and getting there is also very cool. The Club Med sailing attendants will whisk you out there on a Hobie Cat in no time, where you will find excellent fish tacos, plenty of beer and friendly t-shirt vendors that carry more sizes than Target. Yes, there are typos on these. Mine said “Life a Beach,” forgetting the verb, which is understandable if you are writing copy for t-shirts in this setting. Words really aren’t that necessary when you are very, very happy. www.clubmed.us
Right Now, Alaska Airlines can get you there with a Friday direct flight for a little under $700 and the flight time is less than four hours each way. Aeromexico can get you there for under $500 roundtrip, but the flight time can be long (11+ hours).
This summer, Aeromexicowill have 9 rotations of flights, with the first departure on June 15 and the last on August 10. The packages from LAX to IXTC will be cheaper than Alaska Air’s Friday direct flights. The starting package price for one adult will be $1,399 (taxes and transfers included) for a seven-night stay.
