To begin, I would like to say that I feel privileged to be entrusted with this magazine that has served as an award-winning resource for knowledge and entertainment for Southern California families for several decades. Our late founder Jack Bierman created this publication with the intention of viewing the world from three feet or higher. And he breathed this “toddler” perspective into the world nearly 40 years ago.
Parents are always on a never-ending quest for the best for their children — best bottles, best toys, best schools, best tutors, best activities, best nutrition, best ways to confront the school bully. And we are here to be your map in that quest. We strive to be the best resource for you and your family by remaining a magazine that features the best people, places and things in Orange County.
It’s an honor for me to helm this magazine and I will not take it lightly. There are so many things to see and do in this beautiful community, and I was thrilled to come on board right at the time of our Summer Camps issue. Did you know your child could learn how to speak Chinese or Spanish this summer? Or attend a tech camp where they can actually create their own cartoon? They can even sit in the playwright or director’s chair to create their own play. Camps are no longer s’mores, firewood and canteens — but hey, those wilderness camps are still available throughout the OC too.
One of my favorites are the wide range of dance and performing arts summer camps available from Anaheim to Costa Mesa to Irvine to Laguna Beach at some of the most prestigious theaters and institutions in Southern California. In this issue, we take a look at the various theater and dance camps that offer training in a lot more than how to deliver a line or dance routine — including public speaking abilities, confidence-building, leadership skills, creative freedom, camaraderie, and a memorable and educational experience.
Summer is right around the corner and this is yours and your child’s time to explore all of the wide variety of activity and specialty camps available throughout the county before registration begins. Whether your child is looking for new friends and experiences, or wants to attend a camp that allows them to continue their favorite passion throughout their summer time off, we have searched high and low to feature some of the most awesome summer camps that are right in your backyard.
And, of course, we can’t ignore the fact that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Check out our rundown of romantic getaways and give some love to yourself by booking one of these trips for you, your sweetheart or your entire family.
And as I guide this wonderful family publication, my main goal will be to bring families and the community together through YOU. Please BRAG about your child’s accomplishments to me, SHARE your funny or special family moments, TELL me your stories, and GIVE me your feedback.
