The KOST FM Star Teams up with Thrive Causemetics to Bring Makeovers to Cancer Patients
Seeing two glam beauties chatting over a makeup table full of stylish goodies, one could imagine they were discussing the latest movie or a great glass of wine. In fact, these two women, driven by a need to honor cancer survivors and those they’ve lost, are discuss-ing a far more serious matter — how to kick off their new program of meaningful makeovers.
KOST 103.5 and on-air morning show personality Ellen K have formed a new partnership with Karissa Bodnar, Founder of Thrive Causemetics, a cosmetics company dedicated to supporting women with cancer. As part of the partnership, KOST 103.5 and Thrive Cause-metics will offer female listeners undergoing cancer treatment compli-mentary makeovers to improve their confidence and self-esteem.
“I know when my own mother, who is a breast cancer survivor and currently battling lung cancer, was handling the effects of the treatment, the last thing she wanted to do was go out of the house in public,” says Ellen K. “But it was really important to her frame of mind and happiness to be around people, to be social. Women need to connect with their friends and loved ones. This is such a great support to women who are already finding it difficult to feel like themselves, particularly when they don’t look like their former healthier selves in the mirror.”
Thrive Causemetics is Beauty with a Purpose: For every prod-uct purchased, one is donated to a woman going through cancer treatment. Throughout her career in the upscale beauty industry, Karissa felt blessed to know many courageous women who had thrived throughout their cancer treatment. Although many prod-ucts worked as usual, a common issue during treatment was, “What about eyelashes? I can’t seem to find faux eyelashes that work be-cause I’ve lost my natural lashes that keep faux lashes on.”
After Bodnar’s close friend Kristy passed away from cancer in 2013, she wanted to do something to honor her life, so she devel-oped faux lashes that work for women who’ve lost their own.
Ellen K’s KOST Glam Squad and Thrive partnership launched with seven-year old Taylor’s photoshoot for the cover of Par-enting OC Magazine. Bodnar flew in to personally do Taylor’s makeup and to present her with several bright pops of lipcolor (inspired by Little Taylor’s love of T Swift) from the makeup lab to choose her favorite. She then surprise Taylor with the news that forevermore, that color would be named “Taylor” and that every “Taylor” tube purchased would help someone living with cancer. The smile of wonder that news brought was even brighter than the lipstick.
“Our products are named after Thrivers who inspire us. And the newest, and youngest, is our Little Taylor.” says Bodnar. “I think ‘Taylor’ is going to be very popular!”
Taylor will join Ellen K at KOST 103.5’s studio in the morning of Friday April 8th to talk about her inspirational journey and to premiere one of the songs from her album on the radio for the first time. That same weekend, Taylor will celebrate the completion of her Make-A-Wish experience with her very own album release party, fully styled by the Glam Squad.
Later this month, KOST will begin hosting Meaningful Makeover parties exclusively for cancer patients. The special events will allow guests to relax in a fun environment and help cancer patients form a bond with other patients undergoing treatment, all while they receive makeovers and style tips for their specific needs. During each makeover Thrive Causemetics’ expert make-up artists will provide tutorials and application tips and will gift each participant with Thrive beauty products to take home.
For both Ellen and Karissa, these parties while certainly a good time, have special meaning.
“When my mom was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, our worlds were turned upside down,” says Ellen. “We searched tirelessly for answers. When I met the people at Thrive Causemetics, I immediately related to the feeling of normalcy and hope they bring to people fighting a cancer battle. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help women feel their very best while they bravely face this horrible disease.”
“We are thrilled to join KOST and Ellen K in providing our products and makeovers to these women, says Bodnar. “This partnership allows us to expand our impact and hep more women feel good during such a difficult time.”
