Courtney’s SandCastle was designed to offer universal access to children of all circumstance and disability. Designed with easy access for wheelchairs and other accommodations for children in need of physical assistance, the park was a dream turned reality for Courtney Smith, born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Since the age of four, Courtney needed a wheelchair for mobility, but longed to play on a playground with her friends.
The Sensory Garden enables children to engage all five senses to stimulate and open their minds. Its features include musical panels, plants that children can touch, smell, and feel, as well as a simulated tide pool. This new addition not only accommodates children who are suffering physical disabilities, but mental as well. After years of planning, hard work, and dedication, Courtney’s SandCastle is complete. The playground stands as a place that families can bring their children to enjoy and play, no matter what their limitations.
