While most toddlers were stacking blocks with Baby Einstein on in the background, the Sharp brothers sat transfixed by a series of their dad’s classic rock videos, two-year-old Kyle absently drumming his fingers across a guitar left lying around trying to emulate not Barney or Big Bird, but his unlikely heroes Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey. It wasn’t until the age of five or six that he was awarded his own guitar and a brief stint of classical lessons, an exercise that quickly dissolved because, well, Kyle wanted to rock.
The Sharp twins’ love of music has only grown in the years since. They will be sharing their talents this Sunday at ParentingOC’s Jamboree event in Irvine. Now 15, the brothers regularly perform throughout Orange County and beyond — performing as Sharp Turn Ahead in more than 110 shows, playing more than 300 hours of live music, from San Diego to L.A., as well as a show in Las Vegas and at the House of Blue in Dallas since May 2012. Their loyal fan base, swelling since their first show at a local Orange County pizza joint, follows the boys not only because of their talent and unique sound, but their open and engaging personalities. They can often be seen interacting with the crowd, taking photos and chatting with fans long after the final notes of the show have died.
Kyle still rocks the guitar, while Benjamin shows off serious chops on the piano — a skill he picked up in a flash after tiring of just doing vocals. The boys released their debut EP, titled “Just For You” in April 2014, with five original songs, including the title song “Just For You”. A follow-up single called “Back to Summer” dropped in November 2014. The boys do occasional covers, but work with a lot of original material based on their own experiences and lives. Their first single at age 12, “California Ain’t That Far” was inspired by their move from Texas to Laguna Beach in 2009. When not performing and taking instrument and vocal lessons, the boys love to play sports, enjoying football and making the Varsity golf team as freshmen.
Sharp Turn Ahead will be a featured act at ParentingOC’s Summer Opportunities Fair Jamboree, a free family event held at the TVT Day School in Irvine this Sunday, February 8th. The boys will be playing a forty minute set on the main entertainment stage from 2:00 to 2:40pm, before spending some time meet-and-greeting their fans.
