The Buzz on the Bee – Spelling Bee 2013
By Meredith Hughes
The spelling spectacular of the season was held Friday, April 19, as Parenting OC held its seventh annual 5th Grade Spelling Bee. The evening began with 33 3rd through 5th grade students buzzing about Fairmont Private School auditorium. They were accompanied by over 70 supportive parents, siblings and extended family members.
The air was quiet and still as the spelling bee contestants checked word lists and quizzed each other reviewed notes up until the moment the Spelling Bee began. As the clock struck seven, contestants — nervous and excited — looked to the front of the stage anticipating the competition.
The Spelling Bee began and the students gave a momentous effort, spelling advanced words that included “omnivorous,” “ukulele,” “ventricle” and “hyacinth.” For 15 rounds students, went toe-to-toe spelling difficult words and were eliminated one by one until Alexis Kim of Turtle Rock Elementary won by spelling, “colloquial.” Kim won a weekend getawy and family four packs to Legoland and Sea World. Additionally, Kim will receive a week of summer camp at Camp James. Second place went to fifth grader Amber Huynh of Golden Elementary, and third place went to fifth grader Ethan Pham of Harbor-Mesa Montessori.
