Cast: Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, Colm Meaney, Keith David and George Takei
MPAA Rating: PG
Plot: Director Jimmy Hayward’s (“Horton Hears a Who!”) animated buddy film (previously titled ‘Turkey”) film centers on two birds who travel back in time “to the first Thanksgiving. We’re taking turkey off the menu.” The movie recreates some of the wisecracking humor of “Shrek,” with which it shares some DNA, but for the most part it’s garden-variety shtick, and hold the cranberry sauce.
Parenting Points: This is harmless fun, so there are no real concerns or red flags. Interesting that in the wake of a salmonella crisis, the movie was chosen as a tie-in for the Chuck E. Cheese chain, which will back the “Free Birds” release with TV commercials, print and online ads, in-store signage and giveaways, radio broadcasts and offer an exclusive line of “Free Birds” merchandise.
